Sad? He has been solid for a long time before this season, and 36 isn’t that old for a pitcher. He is a good low-risk pickup for anyone who needs rotation help.

Its sucks to get released and see the end of your career on your birthday. However a two million dollar severance package is a nice going away present and hard to feel too bad for him.

As implied in the article, they need roster spots to try out young guys. Even when rosters expand, you can only call guys up if they are on the 40 man roster. They likely needed to create spots on the 40 man roster, so they dropped him. The Twins recently dropped Blackburn and Nishioka from their 40 man roster for similar reasons, to open spots to call guys up (and/or make waiver claims from other teams). It was a little cold to do it on his b-day, but I am guessing they never checked.

Since Wolf will still get fully paid for the balance of the season, it is like a 2 million dollar birthday present from the Brewers.
