2004 was not really “his roster,” he had just become the GM before the 2003 season. If you look at the 2007 roster, which I did and apparently you didn’t, a large number of those players – some key players others not so much – did in fact come up through the Red Sox farm system:

For all the Boston haters out there who said no quality manager would be interested in the Sox because they are hamstrung by huge contracts….

The Sox just became interesting.

The Sox knew going into last offseason that 2013 would be the better year for free agents. They hired a non-players manager to give the players a taste of what that is like and now are poised to bring in the players manager they likely want long term, plus they now have ample room to be players in free agency.
