You’re comparing Casey to the throw-in player the Red Sox got back. Basically they traded Rizzo, Kelly, Fuentes, Patterson for De La Rosa, Webster, Sands, DeJesus, Loney… and shed about $126M that was owed to Beckett and Crawford in the process. Easy win for the BoSox. De La Rosa/Webster is probably more valuable to Boston than Rizzo/Kelly would have been. Pitching is their biggest need.

This day last year, St. Louis was 10.5 games back in the wildcard and do you remember how it turned out for them??? The Phillies are only 9 back, a game and a half better than where the defending champs were. Dont dismiss them yet, they’re 7-2 in their last 9 games(7 against division leaders) and they’ve only lost 1 series in their last 8. Yeah I’d say they’re getting back in it. They’re a different team since trading Pence and Victorino.

Phils have won or split each of their last five series (three of them against teams that will be in the playoffs if they hold their positions). Not enough to catch up, but not bad for a team with no real starting major league outfielders (Brown hasn’t earned that tag yet) and AAA guys holding down catcher and third base.

I was just joking.

The fact that they got rid of Carl Crawford’s contract automatically makes it a win for the Sox.

Just pointing out that, as far as the players in the original deal goes….they traded Casey and ended up with Loney.

Woops, totally forgot about Rizzo, but since he’s no longer in San Diego it’s still hard to say the Padres ended up with the better end of that deal. I guess you can say the Sox are behind though.

Given the net result is that the Sox swapped a top pitching prospect for another top pitching prospect, who ended up ahead won’t be obvious for a few more years.

I think it’s pretty obvious who ended up with the better end of THAT particular deal.
