There is risk in committing to any player for 7 years. It’s more concentration than maturity. And he’s gotten better every year (with concentration, that is).

I’m not so much concerned with a decline due to aging, but with his maturity issues. I think he’ll be fine, but committing to him for 7 years is a risk. I agree with you though. I really like the contract; I was just nitpicking.

Why even be worried about the length? Like you said he’s only 22. The Cubs are buying his 20′s. It’s not like the length of the contract puts him into a player’s typical decline years. I’m 100% in favor of this.

It’s a pretty reasonable contract, except for possibly the length. He never makes more than $11 million unless the escalators kick in. That’s less than $10 per year for a 22 year old all-star shortstop that the team now controls through 2020.

I’d be much happier with a Starlin Castro trade to a team that overvalues him. Several better places to spend your money than this guy.
