sfchamps you want your players to be aware of the opposing field dimensions and it is up to both the player and coaching staff to have them prepared to know the park's dimensions. I would definitely tell players to try and fly ball that was catchable, but would stress the importance of knowing the park's dimensions. Of course there is a risk, there is also a risk that an infielder gets hurt diving for grounder, but thats part of the game. Fine line you walk if you tell a player to not try too hard at defense because he might get injured.

"Minus Rhianna, Matt Kemp's Still Leagues Biggest Dipwad"

"There’s nothing dirty about what that wall did to Kemp. If that wall happened to be at Dodger Stadium, every one of its partitions would have applauded its stopping abilities. That wall didn't deserve Matt Kemp running into it and it’s mind-boggling that Kemp wasn’t ejected for one of the most obviously intentional wall crashes you’ll ever see."

Not a Dodgers fan but this sucks and it leads back to the age-old question, is it worth losing playing time and the contributions a player can make for a spectacular play that saves one or two runs (or even a victory), or maybe none.

This is a real question for players like Kemp, Hamilton, etc. When a player ignores a significant risk of injury for a short term goal, are they helping the team? Can you tell these players not to go all out? Would this effect their entire approach to the game? It is an interesting dilemma.
