Jayjunkie: We all now that isn’t true. Please don’t missunderstand me.
That is part of the charm in my book. The same way you guys use an ‘s’ in lieu of a ‘z’.
You spell “color”…”colour.” Several other cultural differences as well.
But that’s a good thing in my opinion. I have done business in Canada for years.
And lot’s of people enunciate “about”….by saying “aboot.” Nothing wrong with it at all.
Lot’s of Kentuckians and Tenneseans say ‘Yall.” Sounds kind of hilljackish.
But nothing wrong with it either. That’s what makes the world go around. Be proud of “aboot.”

FYI – I’ve lived in Canada for all of my 42 years and have never known a single person who has ever said “aboot”.

@badintnet: The reference was to the shooting outside the Empire State Building last week when police officers responded and shot 9 people, all of whom were not the original shooter.

Look at the guy – he loooks like a weight lifter. GUys have to learn not to punch when they get big – a punch from a guy like that would break noses at least. Last fight I was in was when a new kid moved onto the block and wanted to make a name for hmself. He roped me into fighting him – which was one lucky punch on my part which blooodied his name suffficiently to declare victory and never fight again (50 years and counting.).

Forgot to mention, you get double credit for time served if you can’t pay your bail ( which is usually so low anyone walks out). i.e. in jail for 6 months awaiting trial, you get 1 year removed from your sentence. Find God and attend Bible classes in jail, another year usually removed, etc. Expressing remorse at sentencing, usually good for another 1 removed from sentence.etc.But don’t kill an animal, the judge will drop the hammer !!

He’s right , you kill a seagull , you go to jail for 10 years, kill an adult, a few years, unless pre-mediated.

If it makes you guys feel any better about the manslaughter charges, I was on a team with a kid who practically did the same thing (punched a guy outside of a bar and killed him) and he’s now in jail for 15+. This is in the US however.

What do you want me to say? We are mostly all violent and predatory right below the surface. Look at some of things we say to total strangers on this blog. Civilization paints a thin veneer of gentility on top of that. Alcohol is the universal solvent, it cuts right through to that id down there.

Guys are worse. But I don’t give women a free pass.

Were it but that simple. It’s the same world. It’s just a question of whether or not you want to see what you don’t like in it. I think what you mean is that you don’t want to live that way. Fine. But others around you won’t always give you the choice. The trick is to recognize and avoid them, not to pretend they’re not part of that world or that you can just shut them out of it by pretending you inhabit a different one.

She got that slap on the wrist because Bernardo hid crucial evidence (video tapes) and the search warrant for their house didn’t allow police to look for anything not already in plain sight. Once the statute of limitations to submit that evidence ran out Bernardo disclosed the location of it.

But that still speaks to your point: rarely does our justice system get it right when it comes to dealing with serious crimes.

Alcohol and testosterone. A very volatile mixture. Sports are supposed to be fun. There is always a better way to solve these disputes. I was drunk in a bar in Tacoma Wa. back in the 70′s and a friend got into a major shouting match with 4 army guys. I wasn’t really crazy about going outside with them, but he was my friend. When we all got outside, one of the army guys had a great idea. They decided to pick up a small car and turn it sideways in the parking space! I was all for it. After we managed to get the car moved to it’s new space, we all went inside and finished the night as friends( the guy who owned the car wasn’t real happy, though). I guess it’s just a matter of finding a better way to solve these types of confrontations. No one wins when fists,or worse, are used to settle arguments. I have several false teeth to prove it.
I hope the men involved and the family of the victim can find some peace.

Two drunk guys on a Saturday night get into an argument and decide to “settle” it in the parking lot. Their friends follow and the rest is history. How many points where this could have been stopped? I’m not blaming the victim either, but going outside to “settle it?” Buy the other guy a drink and walk away.

A stranger kills another stranger over a MLB pitching staff. Give 95% of it to alcohol.

The police down here used to call these “misdemeanor murders.” And I disagree on one point, Hooser’s life is pretty much marked, too.

There certainly are instances of manslaughter in both Canada and the US where the person who caused the death get off with a legal slap on the wrist. Much more so here in Canada, if he plays nice the whole time he will only do 2/3rds of whatever sentence he ends up with.

We have it right when it comes to pot, but completely fail pretty much everywhere else.

This is the country that gave Carla Homolka, 12 years for triple rape-murder one of which being her own sister.
She’s now living in Guadeloupe with a husband and three kids

100% agree yankees. I don’t really get how your statements got interpreted as blaming the victim. It’s a simple matter of priorities–choosing your battles. And when both parties are drunk, choosing battles very often becomes based on emotion rather than common sense. I’ve been in bars where overbearing assholes come in and start douche conversations with people. I generally agree with everything they say just to placate them, then I leave because I’m not having a good time.

Long story shorter, the victim is not to blame, but he could have chosen this battle more wisely by not choosing it at all.

(Also: Anyone who thinks the argument/punch was purely, deep down, about the Blue Jays is deluding themselves. It’s about the degradation of societies, community, etc and how individuals cope with them. Trite, but true.)

If you read the linked articles it states that the guy who died was 6′ 3″ so he was no slouch himself. It also states that the intial fight was between the guy who died and someone else (presumably a friend of the meathead above). When the fight was “winding down,” the tough guy pictured above punched the deceased from behind in the back of the head.

I’m not saying cooler heads shouldn’t have prevailed, especially as a father, but its not like these two got in each other’s face and a fight broke out.
