Cole Hamels won’t start tonight versus the Mets “due to a gastrointestinal illness”

Cole Hamels has been scratched from his scheduled start tonight against the Mets and as this tweet from Todd Zolecki of MLB.com shows the Phillies left-hander probably isn’t having a very good morning:

Tyler Cloyd, a 25-year-old right-hander who went 15-1 with a 2.26 ERA between Double-A and Triple-A, will make his big-league debut starting in place of Hamels.

    Hopefully the Mets will be flummoxed since they likely didn’t anticipate this and are now scrambling for video on Cloyd.

    Sucks for Cole but I’m pretty stoked. I was hoping to see Cloyd get some action this season against better competition. The kid looks very promising!

    Cloyd looks like a right handed Cliff Lee, awesome control, and been purely dominant in the minors. Excited to see him pitch in the bigs.

    I expected to see Cloyd pitch against the Yankees for the Iron Pigs tonight, now I’ll get the deaded bullpen game.

    With the advances in technology like smart phones, tablets (e-tablets not Big Chief Tablets) & Kindles…gastrointestinal illness is a lot easier to deal with for todays players than it was say 10 years ago.

    Awesome. Playoff time in my H2H league and my opponent has Hamels. Glad to hear he ate that Ex-Lax-laced chocolate brownie I sent him, with the message saying, “Enjoy! ;-)” and signed “Grant Roberts.”
