Indians designate Shelley Duncan for assignment

Aug 29, 2012, 3:15 PM EDT

Calcaterra is traveling today, but once he sees this he’s going to have to break the news to his daughter that her favorite player, Shelley Duncan, has been designated for assignment by the Indians.

Cleveland made the move to clear roster space for right-hander Jeanmar Gomez, who was recalled from Triple-A.

Duncan’s power has remained pretty consistent, as he’s hit 11 homers in each of the past three seasons while totaling between 247 and 264 plate appearances per year. However, after batting .260 with an .808 OPS last season he’s hit just .203 with a .676 OPS this year, and that just doesn’t cut it for a 32-year-old platoon left fielder.

Sorry, Mookie.

…and breaking such news must be done in person. You can’t drop news like that through text, skype, or phone call.

Unfortunately, Duncan is a part of the Indians-wide meltdown that extends to all aspects of their game. Last night he clanked one in left that was generously scored as a double, which would have given the Indians 3 errors for the game.

In addition to being cut Duncan is still really pissed at his parents for naming him Shelley?

Probably not, since his real first name is David. I’m assuming he chose to go by his middle name to avoid confusion with his father, the former Cardinals pitching coach.

Maybe he’ll get picked up by a team in need of someone who can specialize in going into 2nd spikes high and then act like it’s the fault of the other team. He would be the perfect guy, only he’s going to need to do it as a pinch runner since he can’t get on base on his own.

Love you Shelley Duncan, you rat bastard!
