Athletes are neither inherently naive nor innocent. I promise that the vast majority of drug-using pro athletes made that decision on their own. And I imagine most of them procured their own shit, at least until they got famous.

It would be a great idea for an agent to lead a mega-huge PED ring, though.

Agree 100%. Wouldn’t be surprised if every agent has some sort of connection to a steroids dealer.

And as far as hearing about Boras’ degree in pharmacology, that is no surprise. He sounds like a guy that wears many hats. Super sports agent, de facto manager of the Nats, pharmacy technician, etc…

Would anyone be shocked if agents helps athletes get PEDs? Pro athletes do not tend to be people who have experience navigating the real world. They are taken care of by handlers since adolescence. I doubt that, for most, the taking of PEDs is a decision they come to on their own, or that they know the channels for procurement. Since the agent’s livelihood is directly tied to his client’s earnings potential, a little performance boost is in everyone’s interest.

I have never quite gotten over reading Scott Boras bio a few years back. The biggest agent in baseball has doctorate degree in pharmacology, a legal degree and a history of defending drug companies? If a player needs some one-stop-shopping for career guidance, career “enhancement” and help getting out of any related trouble, there is a guy who is supremely qualified.

I’m not 100% sure, but I don’t think they do. I think they get a portion that is determined from the original sum.

And again, even if they do lose money when a player gets suspended, but short-term and long-term, it’s worth the gamble to them even more than it is for the player:

If the player gets caught, he’s got a black-eye for the rest of his career and the agent loses out on a pay-day as a result of one of their clients.

If Melky didn’t get caught, his 4 year/48 mil (or whatever) would’ve paid off for the agency.

Is it outside the realm of possibility for an agent to encourage an athlete to cheat? What ever contract Melky got in the off-season, the agency is going to get a cut.
