From MLB.com’s Corey Brock comes word that the Padres reached agreement Wednesday on a two-year extension with outfielder Chris Denorfia.

He’ll get $2 million in 2013 and $2.25 million in ’14.

Denorfia has posted a respectable .290/.346/.445 batting line with six home runs, 16 doubles and 30 RBI across 314 plate appearances this season for fourth-place San Diego while making 48 starts in right field, 10 starts in left field and four in center.

The new deal takes care of Denorfia’s final year of arbitration-eligibility and his first year of free agency.

Mark Kotsay also got an extension this summer, so the Friars are all set on mediocre veteran outfielders.

Denorfia is underrated as a player. Always gives 100% and is pretty much a low class 5 tool player. Not much he can’t do when given the opportunity.

Well deserved. As a reds fan I saw him come up from minors and he certainly has improved and worked to become a proffessional ballplayers.

Denorfia has produced an .877 OPS against southpaws while platooning with Will Venable this season. That ain’t too shabby. Sure, small sample size alert, but it’s not that far above his .826 career mark. There’s no reason Denorfia can’t be a useful platoon half/fourth outfielder and outproduce his contract.

The real question is, will Josh Byrnes allow Denorfia/Venable to block prospects such as Rymer Liriano, Reymond Fuentes, or Jaff Decker? With all due respect, those guys are the future, not D/V.

I have a feeling Venable won’t be back and they will look for an everyday right fielder. Kotsay is the left handed bench bat and Denorfia will be the right handed one who will get his playing time by spelling 1 of the 3 outfield positions since he can play all 3.

Decker isn’t in the Padres future anymore as he’s hit 224/371/389 in 180 games at Double A. Fuentes is never going to hit enough to be anything other than a center fielder and Liriano is still a few years away.

I would like to see Venable come back, a platoon of him and Denorfia is certainly good enough to compete for a playoff spot.

Between his frequent injuries and organizations who always were looking for “bigger, toolsier, more upside” kind of guys, Denorfia hasn’t been given as much opportunity as he’s deserved. I’m glad to see the Padres recognize him for what he is–a competent, versatile 4th OF/PH/platoon guy who accepts his role and has no public desire to be The Guy.

Also, schlom has it right–The Padres’ OF “prospects” have not come along as hoped. They’re not as DOA as some think, but none of them are nearly major league ready. Deno is part of what has sometimes been and could well be a decent stopgap setup.
