I agree that McClain's post baseball activities don't paint a very flattering picture of him, to say the least, but he
has a point. He was the last guy to win 30 games, and the Tigers did work him into the ground, similar to the way that the Cubs did 10 years ago with Mark Prior and Kerry Wood. Prior never was the same, and Wood had to come back as a fairly mediocre middle innings reliever. So there is some history to suggest that the Nationals have valid concerns, why not have him miss a few starts for the rest of September and then use him in the playoffs, it makes as much sense as what they're going to do.

Romney will claim that benching Strasburg is another example of individual rights being trampled on by those in power who are hell-bent on interfering with the natural progression of a player's career. Natural competition should dictate how his career will play out.

Obama will claim that sitting him is in the overall best interest of the franchise as well as the fans, in that protecting Strasburg's health will help ensure the long-term competitiveness of the club, and will lead to sustained fan interest and ultimately more revenue for the team.

Romney will counter that there's no guarantee that Strasburg will stay healthy in spite of shutting him down, and that it's in the team's best interest to succeed while the opportunity presents itself.

Obama will counter that the potential to overwork a young pitcher, especially one coming back from injury, is very real, citing the examples of Kerry Wood, Mark Prior and Doc Gooden.

Pat Ryan will counter that none of those pitchers were ever injured.

Joe Biden will counter that none of those men were ever pitchers.
