A lot happened in the Orioles – Yankees game last night, but one of my favorite moments that nobody’s talking about was Boone Logan throwing a single pitch to Chris Davis, who put it into the outfield stands. Girardi immediately went out and relieved him of his duties.
Here’s the pitching line:

And where is Len to give us our FAT TOAD recap? That pitch to Reynolds was appalling. Joba looked decent his previous outing: good velocity, pitches down in the zone, but then yesterday, ouch! Inconsistency is normal after a year off, but really, it’s a measure of how thin the Yankees are that he isn’t working these issues out in the minors.

Good for Texas, this was a game they could have easily let get away. KC is a plucky bunch, I don’t get how that team isn’t better supported by their ownership. They play in a great baseball state, have a good fan base, and have a nice cozy ballpark to play in. What gives?

As for the Rangers, good to see MY actually do something for a change. I like the guy but man is he a ground ball machine. Nice to see Kinsler have a good baserunning night after seeming like he’s been on a mental vacation lately. Scooter was well, Scooter. He didn’t pitch great but didn’t pitch poorly. Hamilton seems to be humming along fairly well and Beltre, man. There’s no words to describe other than ridiculous. These are the types of throw away games that seem unimportant yet can make all the difference in the world down the stretch.

On an unrelated note glad to see Brandon McCarthy make it out of surgery ok. That’s a pretty scary situation.

Yes, it has been a painful few weeks, and doesn’t look to get better. I’ve lost confidence that they have what it takes to get through the problems… they aren’t hitting, the bullpen is pathetic, and the starting pitching is terribly inconsistent. And when is Girardi going to start pitching around Reynolds? All that said, I’m still hoping they get their mojo back and can put this thing away.

Sorry to use a completely different sport on a different continent, but I see some similarities in the way the others think in this situation. Rugby only became ‘fully’ professional in the mid 90′s. But for nearly 3 decades we had Auckland(our largest city, nearly 1/3rd of our population at the time) who had the distinct advantage and dominated. In a strictly ‘non-professional’ sport, we had all the best players playing there as ‘builders’ and ‘salesman’. Basically token jobs for players elite enough to garner attention and admiration from the big cheese. The rest were left to scratch out something which was still very special to them, but below what they should/could of been earning/achieving. As far as fandom is concerned, you despised them, but enjoyed watching them against your team.
It’s the ‘other team’ mentality. Screw the Yanks. Screw Boston and the Phillies. It’s just the way it works. Most are delighted to view the ‘little’ guys making good.

Couple thoughts from watching the Orioles-Yankees game last night: Even though he didn’t know the score when the Yankees tied it at 6, Gary Thorne needs to get back on National Television.

As a Royals fan, the season the Orioles are having does warm my heart. It’s good to see a fanbase for a team thats been bad for years have a playoff type atmosphere in September.

Yankee Fan I’m disapointed in you. You’re a broken down fanbase right now, and rightfully so after that pucnh to the gut last night. However, I’m shocked that I haven’t seen one of say: “Mark Reynold will look good in pinstripes” yet. One of you should fix that.

Chris, even when the Cardinals were in the Series last year, I didn’t watch the whole thing. (In part cuz I get too tensed up.) Although I did watch all of game 7, I actually turned off game 6 in the top of the 10th after the Rangers’ home run – didn’t want to watch them celebrate on my team’s home field.

Anyway, long story short – If my team isn’t playing, I’m not watching. (Although a big part of that is, I’m out of the Cards’ market, and I don’t feel like paying for MLB.tv or sports packages on my cable.) Maybe a dirty word around here, but the NFL is about the only sport I’ll put on (although how much I pay attention to it varies) even if it’s not my team playing.

Feesh byte: Josh Johnson. The boolpen held, some guys got two out hits with RISP, and there was a little bit of noise in the NL East basement for a change.

Larry Beinfest said in an interview yesterday that he wouldn’t be surprised if he got fired or “reassigned within the organization” – which is what Richard III would have called sending his nephews to the Tower if he were running the show today – because – ready? – it comes with the territory.

On to the Capital for the hunger games, Feesh. On the bright side: no matter how badly this goes, and it will no doubt go pretty badly, it won’t go as badly as the Dolfeens’ season opener is going to go.

Young Mr. Harper stole 4 bases last night. None were credited as official stolen bases. He took 3rd on a double; scored on a ground out to the pitcher; took second on a dropped fly ball to short left field; and hustled to first to beat the throw when the shortstop mishandled the ball slightly.

The Nats didn’t hit 6 homers. I felt like asking for a refund on my ticket. Though they got the 8+ runs they’ve been getting most games the past 10 days. The local wings purveyor has now had to pay up in free wings (Nats score at least 6) to attendees at 6 of the 8 games of this homestand. Even catcher Kurt Suzuki, brought in for his defense, is hot; from the .180s to the .250s in a couple of weeks.

Seven homers in 6 games for Adam LaRoche, 29 on the season. Nice to see, after 2011′s lost season, Adam return to be what he is — a top-notch defensive 1B who gives you some power and run production. Before this season, I though LaRoche would move on after 2012 and Michael Morse would take over at 1B, freeing LF for a better defender. Now, I’m thinking he may well stay for another season or two.

Jordan Zimmermann’s performance was most encouraging. It was beginning to look like he was faltering in his first full season post-TJS. But after a shaky 1st and 2nd, he settled in as a strike-throwing machine, finishing with 68 strikes, 28 balls,

The Braves keep winning, but so do the Nats, still up by 7.5. Stephen Strasburg makes his famous last home start vs. young Jacob Turner and the Fish. Mecabs are plentiful and relatively cheap in DC. Stop whining.

Yeah, and you’ve given a team whose fans have been few and cringing for years a real voice on this board, so props to ye too, Rocky. My eldest, who lives in Bel Air and has been a long suffering Os fan (he used to need to be fed copious quantities of steamed blue claws when I visited – at my expense, of course – in order to encourage him to talk about it and stop incubating the bitterness within himself) has lately become rather chippy and voluble. Gladdens a dad’s heart.

Speaking from the tropics, I can only say that Scrooge McLoria is an idiot and Peter Angelos is a genius.

Most of the people on this board are just like you. They are baseball fans. I’m not. I like 2 teams and root against a 3rd. I haven’t watched a pitch in the world series in 3 years. I’m sure nobody is like me on this board, but I’d rather watch Packers-Bears on an NFL regular season Thursday night than game 7 of the world series without a rooting interest.

The Nats are not into the whole throwing at hitters and bench-clearing thing. (The whole Cole Hamels thing was a rare exception). It’s not just Davey. Even when Frank Robinson (about as old school as they get) was manager, they didn’t do it. Davey said after the game, the other guys stopped competing, we’re in the pennant race, we’re competing, we don’t pull that kind of crap. A rather harsh assessment, but it seems fair.
