The Mets gave Chipper Jones a going away present

Sep 7, 2012, 7:51 PM EDT

Chipper Jones has received various items from opposing teams during his farewell tour around MLB. A cowboy hat here, a surfboard there. You know the deal. However, given his history of tormenting the Mets, many wondered what he would receive from the club upon arriving to Citi Field today. Perhaps something traditional like a gold watch?  Maybe something a bit more sentimental like a seat from Shea Stadium? How about a one-way ticket back to Atlanta? Nope.

Via the Mets’ Twitter account, COO Jeff Wilpon presented Jones with a painting by artist Charles Fazzino during a press conference before tonight’s game:

source:

That’s…interesting. Just in case you can’t tell, the pop piece depicts Jones back at Shea Stadium, complete with a fan yelling “Larrrry” from the stands. That’s a cool touch. According to David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, a mix of boos and cheers could be heard when the Mets showed a video before the game of Jones receiving his going away present. Many words were wasted on whether the Mets should pay tribute to Jones at all, but it looks like they handled this situation just about right. If only they could do that a little more often.

Excellent move from the mets organization

Leave it to the Wilpons to do it at a press conference instead of in front of the fans. Weird gift too.

    Laaaaarrrrryyyy… Laaaarrrrryyy

Imagine of Chipper decides to un-retire. lol All these gifts…

He won’t. The quote was that his agent asked him before the season, what would he do if he hit .300 and 20 HRs? His answer was, “I am going to. And, I am still retiring.”

Gotta love a guy who calls a good season, backs it up, and then still retires. He has enough other things going on, including his own hunting show, that he doesn’t need to come back to have something to do.

God the Mets suck. Guarantee they didn’t even pay for the painting. They should have given him Jason Bay.

For those who don’t know, Charles Fazzino is a famous artist who does a lot of New York City and sports related artwork. Even if you’re not an art enthusiast, you have to admit his artwork as a whole is pretty cool and unique. To receive a one-off piece like that is pretty special in my opinion.

Ok…well its probably a good gift then. But they still could have presented it in front of the fans. But with these owners, its all about THEM and not the fans.

Did you see the part of the story relating how they showed a video of the presentation, and it received a smattering of boos? It’s New York Mets fans. The Wilpons know their own.

Moments like these, when Major League baseball is one, big, happy family, are rare.

Am I the only one trying to figure out who is trying to throw out who at third?

Wilpon should have just given Chipper the Mets team. LOL he’s owned them for years!!!!! Bwaaaaaaaahahahahahahahaha.

As far as i could tell it seemed well done by the mets. I do not know but it only takes a few bad apples to spoil a ceremony and considering chippers love hate relationship with mets fans i think it showed both concern for chipper and the mets organization to handle it in a more controlled area. Btw i love the painting, what are the odds it gets willed to Shea one day?

    • kevinleaptrot - Sep 7, 2012 at 11:05 PM

Bad apples in the Big Apple! Who Knew? As long as there’s a Philadelphia, NY fans will only be the second worst on the planet.

      • gloccamorra - Sep 8, 2012 at 12:22 PM

You’re just giving Red Sox fans a pass because they’re egged on by the worst sports press on the planet, aren’t you?

Wait, I thought the Mets already gave Chipper their dignity…

  13. willclarkgameface - Sep 8, 2012 at 10:55 AM

What a shit painting. I hope Chipper tosses that out with the rest of the crap he’s been given this year. Where the hell is he going to put all this garbage?

I hope Atlanta gives him a Camaro or something and that should just about do it. Everything else GOES!

    • gloccamorra - Sep 8, 2012 at 12:25 PM

Chipper would probably prefer a good off-road vehicle for his hunting trips. As for all his mementos, they go on display in his Turner Field trophy room. He DOES have a Turner Field trophy room, doesn’t he?
