Yes, and if the standings remain the same when they meet, one NYY win ensures that TB can’t catch them during that series. And while the Rays pitching is better, the Yanks offense is far better than TB. Not sure why you only mention one and ignore the other.

Don’t hate.

Just cause the Jays flamed out this season shouldn’t be reason to wish for the worse case scenario for as many others as possible.

It’s certainly possible but not probable that both will miss the playoffs and that the third place team will leap frog both.

After today’s games the W/L stats are as follows. Oakland 79 – 60, NYY 79 – 61, Balt 78-62;
TB 77 – 63 and LAA 77 – 63. At this stage, losses are more important than wins. If TB sweeps the Yankees, then NY would be down and looking up. Tampa Bay has the best pitching and New York’s pitching is suspect. By the way, both NY and Baltimore just lost important hitters.

Possible, yes, but the Yanks have a relatively easy schedule the rest of the year. 6 vs Bos, 3 vs TB, 7 vs Tor, 3 vs Oak and 3 vs Minn. TB and Bal still have 6 games against each other, so unless something crazy happens, like a 6 game sweep from one while the other wins 80% of the remaining games, it’s likely one of them knocks the other out of playoff contention.
