Oakland showed the difference between facing a good team (the Angels) and a not-so-good team (The Mariners) in their last two series. Against the Angels they were spanked and left in a heap, only to recover against the punchless Mariners and do unto them.

But the warning signs are there: Bret Anderson just off TJ and 4 rookies pitching beyond their previous innings totals against Greinke, Weaver, et al does not inspire a lot of confidence, even if we do live in hope. In the sweep against the Mariners Griffin and Anderson worked a ton of full counts, only to escape as over-anxious Mariners left the zone to ground out or hit weak fly balls.

Still, it’s now officially mid-September and we are still talking about the A’s on top of the wild card for the AL, with 3 teams within 1 game. Parker vs Haren tonight.

The “kid” is putting up numbers that no one, in the history of baseball, has put up at his age. Short of bowing down at an altar of him, how much more realistic can we get?

Oh, all right, one more note. Nobody expects Matt Dominguez to stay in the MLB on his batting. But in fairness I should point out, Craig, that his 3 HR come on only 40 AB with the Astros.

Just like to point out that my prediction yesterday how the Angels-Tigers game summary would go is correct. For the record, Trout’s batting performance in the game matched that of Andy Dirks — but Dirks doesn’t get the same love here. Heck, Trout’s teammate Callaspo doesn’t get mentioned even though he homered too (and with no strike outs). You’d think Greinke would get a nod for his pitching, but no. It’s all Trout, all the time. Kid is good, but be fair and realistic in covering him.

Yeah. The kids are all right, eh? A sweep. No longer in the cellar (well, the bottom of the cellar, I mean. They got the BoSox to stand on now). Some life back in the lineup, some hustle on the basepaths and their catcher back: just what they needed to show a bit of fight. Finally, some Beaver Ball worth watching.

Thankfully, rotations go down to 4 slots in the playoffs. Darvish and Dutch handled their business this weekend, and with Demp and Harrison in there too the Rangers will be OK. Absolutely no way Feldman is in the rotation for the post-season.

The triumphant Feesh eschew the capital to take on the Feelies in the hungry games. They’ve got three weeks to claw their way out of the basement but horrible horsemeat and Velveeta™ sandwich country probably ain’t the best place to do it. Fortunately, the Gnats take on the moribund Mutts at the same time. They had their afternoon nap yesterday and ought to arrive refreshed and in drag in Nyorc. If the Rainbow Warriors can find some way to win a game in Feelie, they might not lose too much more ground than the woeful feefteen games south of the strange attractor where they now find themselves.

For a Jays fan, the last 3 weeks of the season will be interesting. The team will be competitive as Baltimore and New York will find out. It is fun watching the growth and improvement shown by Gose and Hechavarria. When they were first called up due to injuries, they were out of their depth and were easy outs. That is no longer the case. The fourth inning of yesterday’s game was fun to watch. With one out, Rajai Davis singled. Gose singled with Davis going to third. Gose faked a steal attempt causing Pedroia to cover second. Mathis hit the ball in the space vacated by Pedroia. Davis scored and Gose went to third. Vizquel hit a fly ball to shallow left. The speedy Gose tagged and scored. Mathis to second on the throw. Hechavarria singled to left. Mathis tried to score from second and would probably have been thrown out. The cut off man seeing Hechavarria going to second decided to get him instead. Hechavarria stopped, waited for Mathis to score and was then caught in a run down for the third out. Small ball at its best.

LOL. Yeah, we are a little defensive. And attendance could tank if RGIII has another good game. Saturday night was really exciting, though. Sunday, Davey gave Ryan Zimmerman and Desi the day off, Harper lost a ball in the sun (so did Giancarlo, but too little too late), Ejax was not at his best and Nolasco owns us—hard to figure why. The year ended 9-9 with the &#%@&%* Fish, so it’s some kind of “victory.”

Nats did their rookie hazing thing for the train ride to NY. Last year it was smurfs. This year is was the Oympics, the women’s gymnastic team Olympians…. Bryce looks pretty good in a leotard… Some of the other boys, um, well…

The level of seriousness with which the Nats fans approach every Strasburg comment is starting to approach Phitin’s type insanity. Chill folks. You’re getting very trollable.

For what it’s worth, the Rockies, Red Sox, Pirates, Mets and Mariners have not won since Strasburg was shut down either. Just out of sympathy I guess.

Yankees bounced back after being robbed after earning their game tying run on Saturday. Their remaining schedule lines up well, playing multiple series against sub .500 teams (Boston, Toronto and Minnesota). Sorry rays fans, but you have to be able to score runs, too.
