The study mentioned below was inconclusive it said the testicular cancer could have been caused by other things. Read news reports like that carefully and repeat them even more carefully.

Pot does not have the chemicals in it that cigarettes do which cause the cancer.

Nothing like hearing informed commentary. Too bad you didn’t post this earlier. What stands out the most for me is the disparity between vehicular manslaughter and a drug crime. While many drug crimes are worthy of major punishment, many are not. You’d think that running someone over would draw more ire than simple possession.

We’ve had parts of this debate before on HBT. Fact is CA had a very high incarceration rate, so high that the prison system : 1) costs more than the State’s total contribution to education and 2) violated several court orders on human rights and medical care. Further, despite a massive building program, the State’s prisons were operating at 185% of capacity as recently as 2010. The incarceration rate had increased from about 322 per 100,000 of population to 456 per 100,000 from the 20 year period of 1990 through 2010. About 18% of the prison population is in for drug offenses, including simple possession, costing the State over $ 1.5 Bn annually in incarceration fees. This of course, is in addition to those incarcerated in local jails and federal prisons.

Now, about .005% are in the State prisons for vehicular manslaughter, the crime Smith is accused of. Now that he’s attacked somebody, he’s almost certain to be remanded to the local jail system where a bond amount will be set in due course.

Bottom line, contrary to what morons in the echo chamber might believe, California puts a lot of people in jail-some might say too many. Like most States, vehicular manslaughter is not taken as seriously by the judicial system as is drug crime. Smith will do his time, eventually.

the funny thing is all you people who ASSUMED he was high from smoking pot. Last I checked, they refer to you as “high” no matter what drug you’re on, be it pot, coke, crack, Meth, pcp, heroin, etc.

Getting high means a lot of things. Sniffing glue gets you high. Inhaling laughing gas gets you high. Shooting heroin gets you high.

I wouldn’t be hanging my hat on that phrase, but it’s prerogative.

In the meantime, drunk driving kills millions every year, and MLB doesn’t suspend athletes 50 games for drinking or driving while drunk. There’s a double standard, and I happen to think that’s the issue.

Everything that we do is a potentially fatal endeavor. Some things have more intrinsic risk than others. I would argue that smoking pot is somewhere below Russian Roulette on the list, but somewhere above taking a vitamin.

It is awful when you pay such high prices for tickets, and you can’t even go to the diamond/stadium/arena wearing your teams apparel and feel safe! This is happening across the country, and across all sports, at every level. We are FANS…….NOT FANATICS, we should be able to SMACK TALK………WITHOUT SMACKING! I don’t think that rational people argue this. I’ve just heard it from idiots who think that inhaling smoke is as natural as inhaling air, and that nothing bad could ever happen.

I know here in America that you’re innocent until proven guilty, but why oh why was this clown on the loose, completely unsupervised? He’s already self identified as a sociopath, couldn’t California at least have him wear an ankle monitor and restrict him to his house and work until he goes to trial? This could have ended a whole lot worse.
