Nick Markakis aims for October return after surgery

Nick Markakis had pins inserted into his broken left thumb during surgery Tuesday morning and is still hoping to play next month if the Orioles reach the postseason.

“Originally, they thought they were going to put a plate in there,” manager Buck Showalter said. “They were concerned about the range of motion. They were able to put the pins in there and align it properly.”

The pins are expected to be removed in three weeks. If everything heals properly, it’s possible Markakis would be ready to play in the ALDS, should the Orioles advance.

Markakis was hitting .298/.363/.471 when his regular season was ended by a CC Sabathia fastball Saturday. Chris Davis replaced him in right field on Sunday.

gotta feel for markakis. he deserves a taste of the postseason. such a shame that he wont get to help with the run, but ill take a small chance he plays in october over no chance at all.

I hope he makes it back in time. Playoff teams should play at full strength.

Ya, and he also thought it was a foul ball. Nope. Actually, it was the sound of his bone breaking. Great job CC and the classless Yankees.

Give it a rest it clearly wasn’t intentional. Sabathia had no reason to hit Markakis, .. the pitch was an off speed pitch any way. If one is looking to hit another player it’s usually with a fastball or what’s he point.

I’ve seen Sabathia hit guys as retaliation and there’s no doubt about it. Markakis just didn’t get out of the way of that was further inside than he wanted. It happens in baseball.

We should’ve hit one of them to even the score.

CC is known for his control and for him to pitch so far inside like that is a disgusting thing to do. He and this team are sweating the O’s and this is how they respond by injuring a clubhouse leader? The entire Yankees organization makes me sick.

I am now officially and O’s and anyone playing the Yankees fan.

  7. bigharold - Sep 11, 2012 at 9:13 PM

You O’s fans need to get a grip. Your team is having a pretty decent season, .. for the first time since Bill Clinton was the leader of the free world, .. and now you want to start some half ass blood feud because of a clearly unintentional HBP.

The season isn’t over yet so perhaps the O’s and their fans would be better served focusing on winning the division or at least getting in the playoffs before they get distracted by something that isn’t there.

I agree it was unintentional but CC could have done done a bit more then bitch about it being a strike after he hit him. The sound was awful, no way CC couldn’t tell he was hurt.
