I leave it with the same thing I said yesterday, look at the core of the man (or woman) to determine what he is. There are many good and bad people out there, and in my eyes, that has no relation on the color of their skin.

Don’t even get me going on healthcare. Our system makes me sick. I witnessed a young man refuse a much needed appendectomy. Why? Because he and his dad owned a small construction business and couldn’t afford health insurance and in his words, he couldn’t afford to pay for the surgery. His mother and wife were crying because he wouldn’t sign the consent. I closed the door and laid it out. Your appendix will rupture and you will die from a massive infection. The hospital bills insurance companies differently than people. When you get the bill, tell them to give you the discounted insurance rate because you can’t afford whatever the bill is. Tell them you can pay them $50 a month or whatever until it is paid off. The hospital won’t go after you as long as you’re making good faith payments. He finally agreed to sign the consent. After I left the room, I wanted to cry in anger. No one should have to make that choice.

I am thinking one of two things happened.
1) Hughes did refer to #4 as ‘boy’ & they both agreed it was not said under the context of racism. Insensitive maybe…but not intended to be racial.
2) Phillips thought he heard something racial and after talking with Hughes he realized this was NOT what he heard. If so…I think Phillips is trying to save face.
Which could be another reason why he said they were good.

Short version. I agree.

Now that it has become a he said – he said situation instead of a he said – no one responded situation…Phillips doesn’t have much credibility….still strange to me that the 2 guys talked, Phillips said everything was good but that Hughes DID say something racist (how could he be good with that?) and Hughes says it isn’t so.

We all live here together. Folks will eventually come to terms. Reginald Denny (since he was brought up before) forgave his attackers, in a news conference, with some of his attackers.

It’s obvious we all need to learn history. That is, if we all want to get along. If instead we want to hide behind monikers and blast out impressions and demand to win every argument because there are only two-sides to everything, and every argument demands a one-sided solution that dominates the other side, then nothing will ever change.

Context is everything. It is ignorant to think that “boy” does not have powerful, historical, racist connotations and can be used in a derogatory manner.

Second, piss off. I’ve lived too many places and got to see too many white people be racist assholes and then turn around and deny it for any white person to get the benefit of the doubt. Don’t like it, you can blame your fellow race members (of which I am one) for allowing such behavior and opinion.

Third, if Hughes was innocent, then Phillips was being an asshat in 2 ways. First, my making public comments when he wasn’t sure what was said, and second for not apologizing after the fact, which he should have done as earnestly as possible….rather than maintaining his contention that something racist was said.

I think it’s time we examine if these things are so truly hurtful as to garner an epic response.

Had Phillips said “He called me Boy” then Hughes could have said “I did not call him Boy…I said blah, blah”. Then they could have talked it over and then the issue could have ended. Just because Phillips and Hughes work it out does NOT mean MLB is happy and it does NOT mean the Pirates are happy. An apology, while nice, is not going to be enough to get Hughes off the hook IF HE SAID SOMETHING RACIST.

I have not tried to paint anyone as a racist. Infer at your own risk.

Later, he met the player he tweeted about and talked it over with him. He now says he’s fine, and so there is another 100+ comments posted.
