"Eke out" needs to go. It's word origin comes from "to increase or augment" and has nothing to do with a narrow escape or whatever is in the mind of people who use it.

It always meant to augment or supplement (income) through great effort or extra work or a second job, until the last 20 years or so or misuse made the dictionaries reluctantly accommodate it's misuse. The most flexible reading, which is almost an inversion: 4. eke out - obtain with difficulty; "He eked out some information from the archives" was added later because of it's general misuse usually in sports writing referring to a situation of "barely winning with difficulty."

It's basically peer pressure and fear that caused this misuse to spread. A fear of not wanting to use the more accurate words that the writer is thinking, which is "squeeze out" or even "squeak out" a win, because these words don't seem thoughtful or macho, or open the writer up to sex jokes or other snarky language.

It's OK to say "narrowly win" or "barely win" or some other choice of words. Practice it. After a while, you won't feel the need to write "eke out," unless you really mean it.

In a 162 game season you can never blame missing the playoffs on just one factor, but if we do end up missing there's no doubt that Maddon's insistence on keeping Shelton on board as hitting coach will be the biggest. This team is flat out awful in one run games, and it's because they simply can't hit consistently. 11 men left on base last night, and most of the hitters didn't even have a clue on how they planned on approaching their at bats. Outside of Fuld, Keppinger, Upton, and occasionally Longoria, everyone is trying to hit a homerun regardless of the situation.

No one's suggesting this roster should be great offensively, but there's enough talent to be around league average. And if they were, we'd be running away with the division with the pitching staff we have.

Congrats to the O's. 26-7 in one run games isn't luck. This is Farnsworth's 4th loss in 12 games I believe. Just don't have the hitters to make a run or one that can make a playoff run. If a team scores more than 2 runs against the Rays, it's basically game over.
