If by "many over 35" you mean Molina (gone July 1) and DeRosa (on the DL the rest of the season after May 8), then I can agree with you.

If they were "pretty old" that year, then the 2010 Phillies were several years older than "pretty old".

Did you look at the age of the team in 2010 WS team...that was pretty old and just 2 years ago. Huff, Molina (before traded), Rowand, Uribe, FSanchez, Renteria, Burrell, Andres Torres were all over 30...and many over 35.

The Giants have really moved to a younger lineup. The starting pitching was always pretty young with the core and then adding veterans like Mota, Affeldt, and Lopez. But it is the fielders that have really gotten young. Posey, Sandoval, Belt, Crawford...that is a young INF core to be around for a while. Scutaro adds the needed senior veteran presence, along with Pagan, Theriot, Nady and Huff who are considered the old guys...and half are stuck on the bench and not as starters. So a quick turnaround from just 2 years ago.

Even as late as 2007, when the second youngest regular was Bengie Molina and nobody under 30 reached a total of 300 PAs (Frandsen topped that list with 296), I'd say the stereotype was still accurate. And even after that it was still very difficult for a young player to get and to hold onto a regular role on the Giants. I'd say that it's only since 2009, starting with Sandoval and later followed by Posey, Crawford, and now Belt as regular players, that the old saw about old Giants has begun to go to rust.

Heard a stat on the radio the other day, they said since he's been with the Giants, he's swung and missed at less than 10 pitches. If they can get him for a reasonable price, they have to resign him.

Yes, time to bury the stereotypes about the Giants and their ways, especially with that 7 game division lead. The pick up of Scutaro was astute.

I'll second that "Wow", because these clearly aren't the same old Giants. These days, half of the regular position players are home-grown guys 25 or younger, and of the other regulars, besides Scutaro only one of them is even 30 (Angel Pagan).

Wow.

I'll object to BOTH of the above sentences.

Are there really any teams out there that don't love good, solid veterans?

As for forks protruding from their backs, sometimes yes, sometimes no.

As critical as I've been of the organization's track record, it would appear that they're more careful about adding senior league players these days, and they've also added some youth.

The real key will be if and when the farm system can produce enough position players to make the comments I'm reacting to a distant memory.

Putting this kind of stuff to rest will just be another reason to smile (at least for me) when the team continues to improve.
