I agree with all your comments. Could Arias be the late-inning replacement? I hope the Giants keep Theriot around, even as a bench player, I like his attitude, etc.GO GIANTS!

I would argue that, considering the astronomical value of the product they produce, the value of the skills they possess, and the inherent danger of their trade, NFL players are severely underpaid.

Also, at the mere mention of non-guranteed contracts in MLB is the the threat of a strike. Then everybody loses.

Teams insure player contracts so the "lost" payroll when guys like Freddy get hurt is less than most people think it is.

You're right, Zito isn't worth 19mm, but that is what happens when ownership (Magowan) pulls rank on management and pulls the trigger on player signings (See Rowand. Also, Becket, Crawford, AGon, trade.)

Scoots is the Giants opening day 2B next season, but who is the light hitting, great glove late innings guy? Freddy is too old to be a def. replacement, He's the kind of guy who gets replaced.

Off the bench bat? Sure, better than Theriot and Burriss.

When is the next CBA up for a vote among owners?
They gotta get rid of these guaranteed contracts.
Freddy is a great guy and was huge in 2010, but the injury thing is why these kind of deals are ridiculous.

I like the way the NFL does it. The big money contracts to idiots like Albert Haynesworth never approach their reported value (and more importantly don't drag longterm on the cap) because they get cut long before that happens. Because of the NFL's high injury rate, only a fraction of the bigger deals are "guaranteed".

That's how MLB should do it.

In an ironic twist, this is the first year that Zito has been a consistent starter in SF, but he is still not worth 19 mil per annum.

If Freddy can physically play in 2013, I would like to see him be a role player: spot starter at 2B and clutch hitter late in the game off the bench/late inning def. replacement. Every team needs a veteran player like that.

Perhaps, but then again, $12 million for two years for a guy that was a career .297/.335./.413 isn't the worst deal in the world. I don't know what the market was for 2b when he signed, but i remember thinking it was an ok move. Winning the World Series makes you do crazy things. (Aubrey Huff)

IIRC, the extension was a one year re-up at the same rate of his then current one year deal. But whatever, I like Freddy Sanchez even though the guy always seemed to be made of breakable stuff.

Ned Coletti will sign him, mark my word.

Ha, I figured that would be the sentiment. The timing of his most recent extension was pretty silly, though.
