Ozzie Guillen rips Buster Olney on Twitter

Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen returned to Twitter earlier this month after taking a few months off. It didn’t take him long to create some controversy.

After the Marlins defeated the Reds 4-0 last night behind an excellent pitching performance by rookie Jacob Turner, Guillen unleashed the following Tweets in the direction of ESPN’s Buster Olney. This is a family-friendly blog, so I had to make a pretty key edit.

“buster olney u so full a (expletive) whit u stupid comments about the miami team we still play hard we yes no win games i think u no watch.”

“i think u no watch our games if u say iam bad manager is ok but u ever say my team give up”

Olney didn’t respond to Guillen publicly, but he wrote on Twitter this morning that he referenced the opinion of rival evaluators in two recent articles. The most recent one was on Thursday, where Olney wrote that “the perception among some rival evaluators that the team has not been competitive.”

Olney also wrote that ownership hasn’t excluded Guillen from an organizational evaluation that will take place down the stretch, even though he’s in the first year of a four-year contract. Paranoid and defensive ramblings on Twitter aren’t going to help his cause.

Yeah, always good to make fun of someone writing in their non-native language when only have marginally passable faculty in one language.

      • dugldo - Sep 15, 2012 at 10:34 AM

He spends 9+ months a year in this fine country of ours and makes millions of dollars in this fine country our ours. Put in the effort to learn the language!

I can tell you from experience, speaking and comprehension (both reading and listening) are far easier than writing, especially when the grammar between languages is so different. Obviously, Ozzie did put in the effort to learn the language, as he speaks it and understands it just fine.

His written syntax isn’t any worse than 1/2 the college freshman I have to deal with.

well then he should not be writing on twitter. he has lived in this country long enough to be a citizen so the language should not be an excuse.

Hey, at least we don’t need an urban dictionary to understand what he is saying (cough…Chipper…cough). I’m joking here by the way.

        *(Just saying…..right, hokie)*

Over half the kids? What college are you affiliated with, Moron U?

      • Old Gator - Sep 15, 2012 at 3:04 PM

He doesn’t have much respect for his colleagues either, judging by his previous comments here. He reminds me of that song from Little Shop of Horrors: “Your temperament’s wrong for the priesthood / and teaching would suit you still less / Son be a dentist / You’ll be a success….”

Actually, comprehension of spoken English is by far and away the most difficult part of grasping the language for those with English as a second language.

Let’s hold our fire until we’re sure it’s Slobbering Ozzie who wrote that and not one of his gibbering offspring.

Kenny Powers thinks Ozzie is The Man!!!

Hate the Marlins, meh towards Ozzie but I hate stooges for the Ministry of Truth such as the obnoxious mental midget Olney.

    • Old Gator - Sep 15, 2012 at 3:05 PM

Is this a rewrite of the prologue to “Notes from Underground” or something?

  4. thebadguyswon - Sep 15, 2012 at 10:07 AM

    English is your friend, Ozzie.

  5. randygnyc - Sep 15, 2012 at 10:23 AM

I agree with paper- cant make fun of another’s inefficiencies as non natives. Ozzie does enough that allows for legitimate criticism/ridicule.

  6. Marty - Sep 15, 2012 at 10:46 AM

Think about how jacked his learned autofill function is on his iphone.

As with most athletes, they’re mostly uneducated, regardless if they went to school/university or not. Growing up poor in Venezuela or other Latin American countries, most of these people are illiterate in their own languages as education is hardly a priority. Most kids are off to work as soon as their age/abilities allow.

It’s even more challenging to learn a second language outside of school. The 9 months a year in the US is meaningless as he surrounds himself with mostly Spanish speaking people’s. I’m sure the primary language inside the club house is Spanish and English when necessary. Ozzie speaks well enough to do his job (it’s debatable whether he does his job, well enough, but that’s a different subject). The criticism dispensed here is why ichiro only gives interviews in his native language and has them translated. By all accounts, he speaks English pretty good, but avoids it entirely because he knows how shallow the critics can/will be.

  8. hittfamily - Sep 15, 2012 at 11:52 AM

Ozzie didn’t write that. Clearly, some inbred 11 year old playing World of Warcraft wrote that.

Oh it has been confirmed. MLB, you should be embarrassed this man is a manager. Taco Bell would have fired him for being so obscene, childish, and illiterate, not to mention being really shitty at his job.

  9. charlutes - Sep 15, 2012 at 12:15 PM

He couldn’t run this by someone who can speak English?

    • Old Gator - Sep 15, 2012 at 3:06 PM

He ran it by Buster Olney.

  10. ufullpj - Sep 15, 2012 at 6:23 PM

Not defending Ozzie, but seriously, don’t we see this crap enough from Buster Olney? This guy hides behind more “anonymous” sources than Woodward, Bernstein, or Stephen Glass. I think it’s gotten to the point where he’s confusing the level of his ability with the amount on his paycheck.

Ozzie needs to stop acting like a punk or else people are gonna start treating him like one:
