When he had the great teams of 1996-1999 he didn’t screw things up and kept the players insulated from the front-office turmoil. When the player personnel changed and was not up to standard of those years Torre’s bumbling began to have an effect. But people like you want to give him credit for anything that went right, irrespective of whether it was mostly great players and the breaks going the Yankees way while dismissing anything that went wrong as bad luck. You can’t have it both ways.

Yes, he was treated badly at the end but by that time he had long deserved to be fired on merit.

Yes torre made some disputable decisions but I think he still should’ve been offered his contract of equal or more value.

If you have an employee who’s performing below expectations, do you offer him an equal or greater contract when his renewal comes up? Could the Yanks have handled it in a better manner, probably. But let’s not place the blame entirely on them.

I understand that there was a time to get rid of him but I think he could have won a few more WS.

He hadn’t won one since ’00, and while ’01 wasn’t his fault he made a terrible decision in ’03 (Weaver over Rivera) that helped cause that loss. The next couple of years were terrible pitching performances in the postseason. What makes you think Torre could have done anything to fix it?

I mean really, what is the likelihood the Yankees totally fall apart, fire Joe Girardi, and proceed to hire the soon to be available Bobby Valentine?

He managed Derek jeter, Mariano Rivera, Jorge posada and Andy pettite all when they were young guys

Derek Jeter – came up in ’95
Mariano Rivera – started in ’95
Andy Pettitte – started in ’95

All of those were under Showalter’s command, not Torre’s. If you really don’t think Torre had an issue with playing young guys, you must have been watching another team. And Posada wasn’t a full time player until 2000, when he was 28 years old.

So ya I do think torre got screwed because he won like 4 world series( 1996, 1998,1999 and 2000) plus he got them to the world series in 2001 and 2003 so clearly the man was qualified to make the big bucks.

What managerial genius did it take to win the WS with a team that won 114 games in ’98? An epileptic monkey could have done that as long as Zimmer filled out the line up cards correctly. In ’96, he inherited Showalter’s team and took them to a WS, again Torre should get credit for that?

I never said the guy was a bad manager*, I said he started making bad managerial decisions in the last few years (which you did not refute). He couldn’t handle a bullpen well (which you also didn’t refute), and he was asked to take a pay cut which isn’t really insulting if management thinks the manager is slipping.

*However, playing Devil’s Advocate here. If the guy was such a great manager, why was he only a .500 manager with the Cardinals for 5 years? Could it possibly be that having 3 or 4 viable HoFers on one team for 15+ years, with a few other HoFers for a couple of years, make things a bit easy for a manager?

He couldn’t be trusted with young guys, constantly preferring older guys [for their veteran presents] over youth, he couldn’t handle a bullpen and was starting to make really bad managerial decisions. They wanted to cut his pay, he declined the job and each went their separate ways. Then Torre writes a tell-all about the Yanks, airing some dirty laundry…

If the Yanks do well, you’re not involved in any manager of the year voting since it’s a near $200 million roster and they’re expected to do well, however, if the Yanks don’t perform your head is on the chopping block.
