How the Red Sox discovered Junichi Tazawa

Junichi Tazawa

Why the stats vs. scouts thing is a dumb debate? There are some things one of ‘em can do that the other can’t. Like finding a guy such as Red Sox pitcher Junichi Tazawa.

A great story today by Alex Speier over at WEEI about how the Red Sox found and scouted this guy, involving treks up mountains and a white guy scout trying to blend in at a nearly empty Japanese stadium in the middle of nowhere lest others figure out that Tazawa was being scouted.

Neat stuff.

Aw the Sox never fail to entertain only they would go on a hobbit on journey to get a guy for Pawtucket

I never realized just how Tolkien-esque “Pawtucket” sounded.

I never realized how few people use “Tolkein-esque” in sentences – needs to happen more often…
        Thanks, Francisco!

There used to be a cult piece of graffiti on a wall where I was born in South Africa.
“Tolkein- Just another Bloem (Bloemfontein)boy on acid”

Great story. Craig, thanks for the link. Good luck to the kid. Give ‘em hell. . . but I still hope he gets shelled every time he faces the Beaver Wrestlers.

Tazawa has definitely been a bright spot this season. I wonder what he could do as a starter next year, but then again, I also wondered what Daniel Bard could do.

It’s always interesting to here stories of guys like Tazawa that slip through the cracks and even in the information age where you can find news reports of seemingly every sporting event around the globe someone with such raw talent still managed to almost get forgotten. Kudos to the Red Sox for looking for hidden gems and treating this kid right

Just like a liberal, injecting race into the conversation. Why is this writer not fired? White guy. I’m offended, he owes every white guy an apology or the left will protest and cause mayhem

Mom’s calling. Get out of the basement or you’ll be late for supper.
