Be it a concussion, a “mild concussion,” a sore jaw or whatever else you want to call it, Alex Avila has been cleared to return to action:

Catcher Alex Avila has been cleared to play now that the headaches from his sprained jaw have disappeared. Avila probably will start tonight against the Twins after missing the entire A’s series.

“My jaw is going to be sore for another few days,” he said. “But I feel more normal. No more headaches.”

Maybe it’s just the nature of the coverage Avila and the Tigers get, but it sure seems like there has been less concern about this than one normally sees with a player who was knocked unconscious and suffered memory loss.  All good now? That fast?  Ok …

It’s possible he’s fine. It’s also possible the headaches will recur with strenuous activity. I prefer the more conservative approach of holding the player out for a week.

I agree with the more conservative approach. We’re learning more and more about chronic traumatic encephalopathy and I don’t like messing with the noggin’.

Yeah, I’m with you two. This is hasty.

Or maybe it was just “mild” to begin with.

G-Money’s on a roll, let him play!

Viva Avila! I hope he’s fine and that they’ll be careful with him out there.
