Like I said, Ellsbury is more talented and has more tools.

However, he has only made use of all of them in ONE season.

And he's falling apart.

Yes, really. Let's move away from math and go with the eye test. If you were given the chance to pick Ellsbury or Nixon, who do you take?

Really?

Trot's career OPS+ is 112.

Ellsbury has only been above 100 ONCE in a full season.

I'm not saying he isn't more talented, but being a better player when his body of work really consists of 2 average seasons, 1 excellent season (which was only marginally better than Trot's standout year) and 2 seasons lost to injury and ineffectiveness is really questionable.

This is the exact same thing we went through with Trot Nixon. Some people defended him, and some called him fragile, but at some point you have to ask yourself.....

How many "freak" and "unrelated" injuries does a player have to suffer before they are officially "injury-prone"?

Since coming up, and counting this year, the Red Sox have played 834 regular season games. Ellsbury has played in 577 of them (69%). And of those games he HAS played in, his OPS+ has only been above average for the 33 games he played in 2007 and the 158 he played in 2011. Granted that doesn't take into account defense and steals, but still his WAR is only in the Starter category for 2008 and 2009 and obviously well above in 2011. And he doesn't steal 70 bases a year any more (you know....because doesn't play all that much any more, but even when he does he isn't stealing at the same rate).....

Ok so just purely as a hitter, in those 577 games he's played, he has been above average to great in exactly 191 (33% of the time he actually plays, and 23% of the time the Red Sox play) of them.

And they are considering throwing huge money at him why?
