I would much rather have a centerfielder occasionally allow a ball to be hit over his head, and trade that for the numerous times Jay takes away hits on bloopers, holds runners from advancing to third on singles, and giving him legitimate chance to throw out runners trying to score. His mentor, and predecessor Jim Edmonds took a similar approach, and if I remember correctly it worked out well for him.

*(ok, I’ve watched Rasmus all season in CF: he’s pretty good out there, so the chances of him getting conked is real small, but I gotta laugh or I wouldn’t be me)

No, great comedy would have been watching that ball hit Colby Rasmus in his dome while he had his back to the batter picking grass/and or peeing in the outfield.

Now that woulda been comedic.

No, PC, I gotta disagree. Jay had to be good to come up with it. Positioning is a matter of who the batter is. Jay had to SOMEWHERE in CF: he was where he felt he should be to make a play on what Kottaras, who hits .220 with NO power, would do. Just Jay’s bad luck that George Kottaras actually got enough of one to make that catch difficult. Just Jay’s superior skillz that sees him come up with the ball.

Hell of catch. The ball was a rising line drive. Should he have been playing deeper? Probably.
Based upon the way the ball was hit…of course. But it’s always easy to say that from the couch, the chair, the desk, the stands, etc…

Yeah, every hit is just a situation in which the fielder was positioned poorly….and every diving catch is just a player making up for not being positioned properly. If they would just stand in the right place, all of this running about and jumping and diving wouldn’t be necessary.

while i agree he could have taken a better route to it or been playing deeper, regardless, the reaction to save the play was one hell of a catch. as someone already mentioned, i think the announcers pointed it out an inning or 2 before as well, that he hasn’t made an error all season. the concentration throughout completely saved his error less season!

I can’t blame the theatrics, in nabbing that he avoided his first error of the season. That’s right, the kid has no errors on the season, he is the real deal. And, to use my wife’s favorite joke, he is my favorite federalist.
