it should not have confused Washington. Its more likely that the Rangers had a 5 game lead and just used 6 innings of relief the previous day and 6 this day. That and he never seems to use the best available reliever in tie games.

Craig, I don’t think you’re playing up this pivotal Cubs-Rockies series enough. Going into yesterday’s game those two teams were tied for the second worst record, and youever wins this series is seriously hurting their chances to get the #2 pick in the draft! If I were a Rockies fan, I would have been really disappointed that they didn’t let this game finish!

Wash bringing in Mark Lowe with the game tied in the top of the 10th was an example of what a gentleman the former A’s third base coach of 11 years really is. After Melvin had brought in Tyson Ross the night before, Wash felt obligated to return the favor. That’s just the kind of all around nice guy he is, and one reason he’s so fondly remembered here in the Bay Area.

Seriously, much better pitched game for the A’s last night. Despite Brandon Moss’ glaring 2 base error in right in the first inning, Milone kept the damage to one run. Local Boy Scott Feldman was not a disaster for the Rangers, and the 2-2 game after 9 was the kind of the game the A’s have been losing lately. But last night’s win makes them 2-3 in 5 consecutive 1 run games, and 3-5 on the Road Trip of Death. The pesky Angels refuse to lose after striking out a record-tying 20 Mariners in their game, so it’s still very tight for that second Wild Card, with the A’s up by two.

Lost in the box score is how David Price struggled the first 3 innings. It looked like it was going to be a short night for him. Price was just throwing strikes, his cutter wasn’t working, and the Sox were aggressive at the plate. Price seemingly transformed into the Hulk after a balk call that allowed the Sox’s second run to score. You could see the anger in his face as he clenched his jaw. Sometimes balks are subtle, but this one was the balkiest balk I’ve ever seen and he was pissed at himself. He struck the next guy out, and allowed only one other hit the rest of the night. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought I heard the announcers say that Price didn’t allow a 3 ball count the entire night.

Bell owns two pitbulls. Really. He probably will need to start bringing at least one of them to work with him. But clearly, the newspaper oracles suggest that there’s a big push on now to scapegoat Bell for the entire season – you know, it’s Bell’s fault that the rest of his illustrious teammates can’t drive in runs or catch infield popups or hold leads. Even the normally mild-mannered Clark Spencer seems to have it in for him. He is being driven out into the wilderness to fend for himself among the jackals and angels. At this rate, they risk making Bell himself appear sympathetic. What goes around comes around, and what comes around often enough gets nauseous.

Boy, I’m a fan and I didn’t remember that one. But I think Simon got better when he jettisoned Garfunkle. More thoughtful lyrics; fewer pretty harmonies.

The crowd was a little less desultory than I thought, at an official count of 16,943. The place just looked like the Crand Canyon from my television.
