I don’t know Bo Porter. He may be great. If we get him, I hope he is. But how key is a 3rd base coach to the success of any franchise?

I’m not sure if you mean for the MLB or for the Astros. But the upside for Crane is the
80 MM$/yr cash flow that starts from the new Comcast network next year. Assume the Astros make it back to respectability with a Tampa Bay-type payroll and a good minor league system; he and his partners will make wheelbarrows full of money.

They need a solid manager with AL experience. Ideally, managerial experience. None of the folks they’re apparently considering have that experience.

They also need a lot of other things, starting with better players, and going all the way down to better uniforms and logo. They are downright ug-lee.

I’m still not sure I see the upside.

Obviously, MLB thought they would expand further to 32 teams, and that didn’t happen. I am betting the original plan was 8 4-team divisions with no wildcard…and they didn’t want to go to 4 divisions in the NL with only 3 in the AL…..and because they couldn’t strong arm more local politicians to pay for stadiums….they were stuck….so they went with 6 5-team divisions. I’m sure teams in the NL Central were bitching about the lack of competitive fairness in being in a 6-team division.

In any case, they don’t have the power to force anyone to do anything….there had to be an agreement. I’m sure Brewer fans didn’t want to change either….but they got over it….maybe there will be some upside that just hasn’t been realized yet.

He said he didn’t want to. Probably true because it gave him a big PR headache in Houston, where it is tremendously unpopular (including with me). But a 50 MM$ rebate took a lot of the pain away.

Yeah….because there are soooooo many opportunities to buy a MLB franchise….that you can just make demands as you bid.

For the 12 billionth time, MLB doesn’t have the power to force any team to change leagues. Teams are asked and either agree or do not. Brewers ownership would have said no…and MLB can’t make them move.

Who could they make move? The new Astros owner by making in part of the deal…..and why should Crane care, really?

Can’t pull for the Stros any more since they are moving to the AL. Shame on Jim Crane for caving in to Bud Selig. The Brewers should have moved BACK to the AL.

Don’t be so quick to assume Martinez will be available yet as they are still very much in the wild card race still.
