But a little perspective here. Freeman’s homer clinched an appearance in the National League Death Match(tm). Bobby Thomson’s clinched the National League championship. And that didn’t surpass Bill Mazeroski’s walk-off homer in Game 7 of the 1960 World Series. Thomson just had better PR, in the form of Russ Hodges’ great call. And New York City hype, of course.

BTW, what about Mike Scott’s no-hitter to clinch a playoff spot for the 1986 Astros? That was pretty remarkable.

Weird how Phillies fans could “abandon” their team, yet lead MLB in attendance?

Weird how there were more fans in the ballpark to witness Darin “Babe” Ruf’s 1st MLB homer than there were to see a “wild card clinching” HR by Freeman… and really… that is just sad.

Enjoy the playoffs… but most likely, enjoy the extra game that Atlanta gets to play before joining the Phillies players on the golf course.

We will also remember how the Phillies payroll is dominant, but that is not reflective of wins.

We will also remember how your Big 4 and then Big 3 Starting pitchers really never accomplished anything but one NL East Title and in the end the comparison of Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz, and Avery was not even close. Sadly it will likely go in Braves lore but not baseball’s like Thompsons hit did.
