Mike Leake “on the bubble” for Reds’ playoff roster

Cincinnati skipped Mike Leake‘s turn in the rotation yesterday in order to keep Johnny Cueto on regular rest and Mark Sheldon of MLB.com writes that Leake “realizes he is on the bubble” for the postseason roster.

Cueto, Mat Latos, Bronson Arroyo, and Homer Bailey are all ahead of him on the rotation depth chart and playoff teams rarely if ever require a fifth starter, so Leake’s status may come down to whether the Reds have any interest in using him as a reliever.

His five career relief appearances have been brutally bad, with 17.36 ERA and 14 hits allowed in 4.2 innings, but Leake noted that he could also be useful as a pinch-runner or pinch-hitter and told Sheldon: “I know I haven’t deserved a spot to be one of the four, but I feel I can still help.”

One idea is to have him on the bench as an extra-innings pinch hit bat and as a pitcher for the last six innings of a potential 18 inning game.

Yeah, he’s arguable a better hitter than Stubbs or Cozart….and just about any bench player they have.

he is a better hitter than stubbs for sure but then again just about all the reds pitchers are. but he is also a better hitter than cairo and valdez their “top” bench players. Reds fans can only hope a series does not come down to needing a clutch hit from those 2 or stubbs or they are doomed.

Can he steal a base? C’mon, can he? I bet he gets caught.

if it’s a question of running Leake, Miggy Cairo or whoever is the backup catcher at the time, Leake is by far the better alternative. They won’t have him on a steal sign but he can probably do 1st to 3rd the way Dusty likes it.

As for batting, he’s hitting .288 with a couple of dingers this year. Having him on the bench makes sense.

No doubt CG. Dude is an athlete.

He doesn’t steal bases per se. He just doesn’t understand the policy regarding base stealing and thus if he does steal a bag, it was simply a misunderstanding.

Thank you for getting a historical reference. I was afraid all hope was lost for humanity. I will now stop asking Dog to destroy the world.

People sure are dense. What place does a stealing pun have in a Mike Leake article?

They should have him hold onto the NL Central division champs t-shirts.

Very disappointed in Leake’s season. Thought he would have had a much better year. But that said, dude can flat out hit for a pitcher and is easily one of the top 2 or 3 bench bats the Reds could roster. Are they really going to carry 3 catchers? I’d take Leake over Mesoraco in a heartbeat. That dude has been brutal all season.
