They are all flawed players. Bourn is a 30 year old speedster with 150 K's. Victorino is nothing more than a stopgap and Upton is going to get much more money than he deserves. You need to build from within and fill in the gaps with reasonable low risk, high reward deals.
Okay Mets fans...chill out!

Listen, I've been waiting since 1986 just like the rest of you, and you know what? If we sign BJ Upton, we'll still be a .500 team. Since when has signing over-27-year-old players to massive, crippling contracts helped us? That's how we got in this Jason Bay mess in the first place! I trust our front office. Alderson has shown that he's shrewd, smart, and savvy. He's thinking "long-term," and we should, too. Look at the team Washington built! It's going to take more than adding one player to compete with them. We need to keep investing in player development and look for low-risk, high-reward signings (like R.A. Dickey). It'll be a three-or-four year process, but at least we could actually be competitive at the end of it. Then, we can sign the big-name free agent who could put us over the top. Now, it's just a waste of cash.

Heaven forbid they should spend any money and make an effort to, uh, what's that word, I'm thinking about the Mets so that word doesn't come to mind.

Oh, yeah, it's "WIN".

I've been following MLB since I was 5 years old in 1961. There's no doubt in my mind that no team's fans have been done a disservice over time like those of the Mets, even with the two world championships. I'm very far from being a Mets fan, but I feel sorry for them. Other teams have had lousy periods under lousy ownership, but no team has had ownership as consistently bad.

Actually, it makes sense. I would like for the Mets to sign B.J. Upton but they are probably thinking that Jason Bay will be good in the final year of his contract, which will make him very attractive for a trade for some bullpen help by the trade deadline. The Mets are probably hoping Lucas Duda and Kurt Nuweinhies or Mike Baxter can have brakout season and be consistant next season so the outfield could be pretty good. With the young pitchers, alot of bullpen help, consistent hitting from Wright, Davis, Shoppach then the Mets could be a winner. Just my opinion.
