An ERA in the mid-threes for a closer is mediocre.

An ERA over 4.00 vs teams with winning records (over 5.00 vs playoff caliber teams) is even more pathetic.

After the last game of the season, his teammates should give him some duct tape therapy–set him in front of his locker with his arms taped down and his mouth taped shut. Then bring in the reporters, with instructions to not touch him.

If they don’t like that idea and if they still have a road trip left, take away his clothes and leave him an adult-sized diaper. Let him fly like the big baby he is.

For anyone wondering why anyone would consider Perez a jerk for just being “honest”, go read the Heath Bell story about his teammates embarrassing him in the clubhouse in response to his comments about Ozzie Guillen. At the end of the day people just don’t like guys who constantly bitch and moan about everyone else but themselves. Jay Cutler is another good example with the Bears. The question of why it’s wrong to say something as long as it’s the truth also doesn’t hold water. If your wife is fat, is anyone who comes to your house allowed to call your wife fat? I’m guessing you might be offended by that even if it is true. Chris Perez is trashing his teammates with his words. He’s an attention seeking bitch. He makes Logan Morrison seem humble by comparison.

In general, I am my own worst critic and am highly aware of my flaws and shortcomings (even if I can’t always control or ameliorate them or their effects). People stating the truth about what is obvious just doesn’t bother me….and I don’t see how it should bother anyone else either. Indeed, if there is a problem….pussy footing around it instead of head on recognition just prolongs addressing and fixing the problem.

Let me make sure I have everything straight here based on what Perez has said this season:

1. His team sucks because they aren’t in games and can’t get him save opportunities.
2. The Front Office sucks because they assembled this crappy team.
3. The Owner sucks because he won’t spend the money needed to get better players (also known as teammates).
4. The fans suck becuase they woun’t come out and support this team, that Perez has pretty much admitted sucks.

Looks like everyone sucks, you know, except for Perez.

I don’t think he’s “colorful”. I just think he’s not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

The implication here is that the state of the perennial non-save situation is his teammates fault for letting the game get out of hand, not his. Sure its true, but do want your colleague going on national TV and decrying your failures, ‘lions? Truth is no excuse for that kind of thing. It might also be true that one’s lack of a lady-friend might be due to one’s ugliness and so forth. You want your colleagues saying that publicly? Truth, while evident, need not be remarked upon: it isn’t going to help your relationship with your colleagues one bit.

Perez is mouthing that they have not been in many games, well that relates to the starting pitching and other teammates. The starters might suck, but they have probably been busting their ass trying their best. They are just not very good. How would Chris Perez fair as a MLB starter? I am sure there are a couple guys who would do an equal or even better job than Perez pitching a specific 9th inning.

A bad team doesn’t need to be taking inadvertent shit from guys like Chris Perez. They know they are not as good as the rest of the league, they don’t need a guy on their own team gesturing that he is better than them.

Context specific explanation, papal. I thought that was a given, but whatever. And its the Indians, not the Giants (who are IN the playoffs).

Also, Stex: yep. Notice how Brandon McCarthy can do this right? Curtis Granderson? Larry Jones? All without trying to be Mr. MLB Clever-Controversial, having to resort to “Crash Davis Speak” or, in Larry’s case, actual English. Hell, Shane Victorino (where’s he from, anyways?) can talk for 20 minutes after one question and he doesn’t piss off everyone. Bryce Harper? Well he studied up his Crash Davis, but he knows how to do the riff type comment, too. Chris Perez’s schtick is of the toxic, passive aggressive variety that you find in teenagers. Gets on my nerves.

Nothing worse than a person on your team criticizing or devaluing your effort. It rubs people up the wrong way very easily and creates a negative environment, which is not conducive to succeeding.

I have been coaching that to 8-18yr olds for the past decade. It seems Chris Perez forgets it’s a team sport. Guys a jerk.

It’s not necessarily because his teammates failed, it could also be because they’re so far ahead or whatever that the save opportunity isn’t recorded.

I appreciate it’s not strictly true in the Giants case this year, but for what it’s worth, the vagaries of a ‘save’ situation are not necessarily through fault but through fortune.

Easy to see why he’s a jerk: its not up to Perez if there’s a save opportunity. Its up to his teammates. Hence, if there are no save opps its ’cause his teammates failed, QED. If you are his teammates how do you view THAT? He’s a jerk.
