I’m a Tigers fan, admittedly, but I also thinkTrout should win the MVP. But doesn’t everyone kind of do this? Hell, aren’t Trout supporters doing this? “The Triple Crown stats don’t matter, WAR does.” Now, I agree, but it’s because I’m making a decision that WAR is a better stat than those other stats. Morosi made a decision that some stats are better than some other stats. Everyone does that every year in every non-obvious MVP/Cy Young race.

When Morosi was with the Free Press, he was a very big Tiger booster and I saw him more as an extension of the team rather than any kind of independent reporter.

Objectivity, or even the pretense of it, was not at all his thing.

I understand where you are coming from Alex.
However, right or wrong isn’t really what I was getting at Alex.
It seems whenever anyone disagrees with or otherwise criticizes Craig everyone falls all over themselves defending him to the point of it being a perpetual slow jack.
It’s almost like a competition. And it is almost sickening.
If I didn’t know any better I would think they were on the payroll.
The Man is quite capable of defending himself. In fact, he is damn good at it.

Those measures, I believe, include chances he “should” have made that weren’t
errors—this is the range issue. Anybody who watched Brandon Inge make spectacular
plays and then horrible throws on routine grounders, appreciates Cabrera’s accurate
strong arm…He’s been fine at third.

I’m not sure why you think Craig’s political persuasions are at all important to this debate. Unless you think liberals have a monopoly on facts, logic, and intellectual honesty. But I guess I have another reason to root for Mike Trout if Miggy Cabrera (despite being Venezuelan) is the darling conservative candidate for AL MVP.

Defending Craig isn’t my job but all he did was say the statistical basis Morosi used was false – which it was.
If you’re going to use a method that depends on metrics to support your position it’s illogical (and dishonest) to pervert that method by crafting an argument that doesn’t stand up to scrutiny.

Hey Norm,
He most assuredly MIGHT be killing the Tigers at 3B.
Fangraphs has him second from the bottom of qualified 3B (10 runs below average) and BillJamesOnline has him listed as 27th. Remember Matt Anderson? He had a great arm. Doesn’t mean much by itself.

I would go with Trout. Yeah Cabrera has a higher OPS but Trout plays a more defensively “valuable” position. Furthermore, despite some of my misgivings about WAR, Trout clearly trumps Cabrera in that category.
