You understand you could make any player look good by cherry picking stats right? Chipper Jones is a hall of famer, but I didn’t realize there was or should be a club for this grouping of stats.

Mickey Mantle missed it by .002 in BA. Actually, Mantle and Jones’ career stats are eerily similar. Mantle was much more dominant in his era, but other than trading some of Chipper’s doubles for a few Mantle homers, they are very close.

I look at Todd Helton as the odd one in this group of select, elite hitters. Without the Coors Field effect he would be right on the edge of this group. His career HOME slash line: .350/.447/.613. His career ROAD slash line: .289/.389/.475.

While Manny had some personality issues and certainly deserves a downgrade for trying to get pregnant, he was a truly elite hitter. Helton, on the other hand, is a very good hitter benefitting from a truly elite ballpark effect.

This surprised me quite a bit, too. But for a little different reason. I always thought of Chipper and Jeff Bagwell as very similar talents. So I thought of them both as HOF-possible talents but not absolutely elite in history. A cursory look at the stats bears out that they were very similar. Except for one difference: Chipper has 1200 more PA’s. There has been a feeling around Houston for a while that Bagwell’s retirement due to shoulder problems left him a little short of the cumulative stats needed for a sure trip to Cooperstown. The thought was that he needed two more years. Comparing ages, I’d say two to three.

Now that I realize how elite their performances were, it really strengthens that thought. Congrats to Chipper. He truly deserves the HOF trip. But I hope Jeff gets it, too. (BTW, in interests of total disclosure, Jeff’s career BA was “only” .297)

There’s still a change Chipper could come in as a pinch hitter and have to stay in for extra innings long enough to end up under .300 for his career. He has to go 0-117, which is possible if the game goes 293 innings or so.

That’s pretty elite company. I always knew Chipper was good while he played, but I guess I didn’t always think of him as a superstar while he played. It always seemed like someone else had bigger seasons every year. He always kind of seemed like the 2nd tier of superstars in any given year. But, the ability to stay even in that tier for as long as he did is amazing. Seeing some of his totals now gives me a new respect for his abilities than what I had previously.
