Chase Utley is already the bench coach. I’ve seen players go up to him before at bats and ask for advice on facing a certain pitcher, etc. He will manage someday.

Actually I’ve read that Bench Coaches often do the leg work for the Manager in compiling the stats and reports on the next team they are set to face, including the possible match-ups, the situation in the opposing bench and bullpen, and also has to be ready to offer advice in any game situation to the Manager (who is free to take or ignore the advice).

Seems like the Phillies are getting a ton of attention for a team that missed the playoffs, looks like the rest of the league is still on high alert for next year. The NL east title WILL be on its way back to Philly!

There are dozens of minor league managers that are good at their jobs (which is player development, not winning games) and that have been doing it for decades longer than Sandberg…and those guys are rarely offered MLB jobs either….it isn’t a question of adding up….so much that there aren’t that many MLB jobs to be had and there are a lot of guys with a lot of experience (far more than Sandberg has).

Well, Pennsylvania baseball doesn’t ever suck. For as many losing seasons as the Pirates have had in the last two decades, they STILL have the upper hand on everything Florida.

Have you seen their ballpark? No comparison.

And the Phillies, while I feel Ruben Amaro Jr is a dink, are still a successful franchise, having recently beaten your Tampa Bay Rays in the 2008 World Series.

Upper hand Pennsylvania again.

Florida is a dump and not worthy of having an MLB franchise, let alone two.

Any other thoughts?

Lee also suffered from giving up moon shot home runs. papelbon was fair at best for 50 million. Howard is helping Philly go green with all of the wind he generates from striking out so much. too many unproductive outs. And saying amaro was pretty good outside of the bullpen is like Mrs. Lincoln saying outside of my husband’s assasination the play was pretty good. It cost your team 10-12 wins this year atleast.

This thing with sandberg has lameduck written all over charlie and this will become a major problem. Just ax him if you want sandberg to manage. don’t slowly let this guy bleed to death. If larussa or leyland or any other competent manager coached this team for the last 5 years instead of charlie phils would have won 3-4 rings. 2008 things just fell right, but charlie had little to do with it they were just that good that year.

If you ever watched Phillies games you’d see the Lee has suffered from a lack of run support the entire second half (when in fact he’s actually pitched very well). Papelbon has been solid all year. Oh and Howard may not be the best to hit for average, but his presence in the lineup certainly did change the dynamic and was part of the reason the Phillies played better in the second half.

RAJ has gotten heat this year and rightly so, but honestly he’s been a pretty good GM outside of his mishandling of the bullpen situation this year.

What they need to do but cannot is fire Ryan Howard, Jonathan Papelbon, Cliff Lee, and that damn mascot.

Rebuild that team, kill the Phanatic once and for all, and let Ruben Amaro Jr. eat some humble pie.

Hopefully he’ll have enough for Rizzo in DC once the NLDS is finished.

I have heard many times how Ryno is regarded as a very good manager in AAA but he never gets offered a MLB Manager job.
