Let’s see, 2 teams imploded last September and thus missed the playoffs when they should have been in. One fired their manager, turned into a circus, hired a new manager that few thought was a good fit, and then spiraled into complete panic mode, ultimately being a punch line all year. The other stayed the course and is in the playoffs this year (the Braves of course).

Yeah, a lot of people, especially Red Sox owners and management really ought to have been more okay with a 90 win season.

The way Valentine handled his entire season also ruined any chance he had of getting another gig with ESPN. Nice “severance” package though. He can now go away quietly and enjoy the game from a distance. Although I get the feeling he’ll do that in a similar manner to Pete Rose.

Is it possible that Valentine did what he was really hired for? Is it possible the team hired him only to anger some players enough to find out who needed to be shipped out and who should stay? After having an extreme players’ manager, the team may have wanted someone to come in, kick some butts, and maybe make a few players realize that their cushy jobs aren’t guaranteed. He did that, came off as a jerk, and now the team can hire someone that is still a disciplinarian, but will look like a players’ manager by comparison.

This may be way too much credit to give to Red Sox management to have actually devised this as their plan. But, that may be the way it ends up working out in the long run.

Ok – so Bobby V was given his walking papers. What’s next? Tough job for the next manager and are they lining up to apply.

Face it – maybe they don’t re-up Big Papi and instead they give big bucks to Nick Swisher
Maybe Cody Ross will take the Yankees money and replace Swisher in RF.

Can you count on Lackey – probably not.

The Red Sawx will lots of money to throw around but maybe free agents would prefer to place elsewhere.

No. No announcement was made. Ben let it slip that he wanted to conduct the search himself and not spend the ridiculous amount of time on it that they did last year.

We all knew he was going to be canned in July even when the team said no.

I just hope Bobby’s agent was on the phones this summer with all the major carriers of baseball programming trying to get him a job.

They never should have hired him in the first place, but firing him won’t make a huge difference either. They need to get rid of Lucchino, then you’ll start seeing the ship right itself.

Oh yeah, and NOT resign Ortiz for even one year, never mind two. A 37 yr.old DH with a bad Achilles is not the player to build your team of the future on.
