Issue: Will Ozzie be fired?

Rule: Managers are often scapegoats for under-performance of the team. Loria doesn't like to spend money if he doesn't have to. Loria does not get along well with managers. The Marlins need a manager.

Analysis: The team did not perform as expected and Ozzie may be partially to blame. However, Ozzie did not add or subtract any personnel from the team, and firing him would not necessarily improve the performance of the players on the current roster. It would cost a good bit of change to fire Ozzie so early into his contract. That money would not be immediately recouped on the balance sheet through higher ticket sales. Chances are Loria would love the new manager only as long as it took for him (or her) to get on Loria's bad side.

Conclusion: Unless Loria can find a way to reduce the cost of firing Ozzie, I think he'll be around for another year. Especially if Loria can find another scapegoat who is replaceable at a much lower cost.

Alternate Conclusion: Loria's first love is art and his decisions often defy logic. So, I expect Art Howe to be hired as the next Marlins manager within days based on his experience of having a desirable first name.

The local spawrts tawrk raydeeo and print media scuttlebutt on Slobbering Ozzie has been oscillating keep/fire for weeks now. Scrooge McLoria needs a scapegoat - not for P/R reasons so much as to salve his ego over his stewardship of such a monumental bust of a team. Yesterday the slob-o-meter was twitching over to the green side, today the red. Tomorrow, who knows? Another thing to consider: who knows, really, how much input Scrooge had on the signings last season - or the season before, when the ridiculous $18 million commitment to Black Hole Buck got made? I'm still shaking my head over that one. But Scrooge is reputedly as hands-on as a grope on the Broadway Line at rush hour. As far as the repeated comments about how much money the team spent on free agency last year, that's been a bit of a red herring all along. It's easy and proper to blame Larry Beinfest for the Buck signing, which set the precedent for Heath Bell this season (and really, of the three big 2012 signings, it was only Bell who badly tanked - the rest of the disaster was having holdovers like Buck, the Hanster and Tweeter continue to non-produce, and some of the holdovers from last year's boolpen, Dunn especially, follow Bell down the drain).

I'm no fan of Slobbering Ozzie's, but to hang the blame for this season't mega-fusterflunker while leaving Beinfest and the teflon Chihuahua in place, unscathed, strikes me as hypocrisy in motion.

It would make a colorful year in Miami if he were to stay, but even then he'd never make it the full 4 years. Simply put Ozzie will be better without Miami than Miami will be without Ozzie.

Hmm. Good point. They don't call him Scrooge McLoria for nothing.

Then again, it wasn't Ozzie who gave up so many walks, homers, and late inning leads. So if the Feesh care more about winning games than saving a few bucks...ahahahah never mind.

He is, and behaved all season as, the same dude he has always been. His still the same guy they hired. This speaks of some way poor management, that is not news for this club.
So, does the slobbering one go home, or travel, Cuba might be a good spot, and collect some checks, or does he get another job?

Waiting for Old Gator to check in on this.

But while he didn't do anything wrong on the field, he seems to be a distraction in ways that would justify trying to change things. I wouldn't fire him so fast, but I suspect he will never do well there.

Then again, I think no one will. His predecessors are proof to some degree that the best thing that can happen is leaving for better venues.
