Well, lions, the ump was at least consistent in calling that on Carpenter – he called it on the Nats all day, too. But overall, the home ump’s zone was pretty dodgy. Can’t complain too much – the weather, the shadows, and the bumpy infield (think high-hopper to LaRoche that went as an error) all were things that the Nats, had this been the normal, proper home-field advantage arrangement, would never have had to deal with. They might have coasted at home instead of struggling so badly at Busch.

The strike zone was wide all day. That strike to end it was definitely not even close, but he was consistant. Consistantly bad and a wide strike zone both sides of the plate but consistant none the less.

If you would have told me the Cardinals would get 2 runs without recording a hit I would take that to the bank as a very likely ‘W.’

Yeah, that was pretty bad. But the Nats have recent experience with Paul Emmel calling balls and strikes. Let’s just say he’s a bit inconsistent. OK, a lot inconsistent.

If you had told me that Gio would allow 7 walks, the Nats would not get an XBH and Werth was going to K twice with the bases loaded and two outs, I would have figured the Nats were going to get stomped. It’s just a reminder that teams need unsung heroes to win in the playoffs.

Oh I agree, and trust me as a Yanks fan who swears the team only hits grand slams, or gets one run with the bases loaded and no outs, I know how it is when a team squanders chances.

Btw, I loved the comment from Dick Stockton about how a simple put out was the defensive play of the game, about 10 min after Werth robbed that HR.

Yeah…horrendous. But Washington still did far more than St. Louis to win this game.
Bases loaded and not outs you gotta’ bring em’ in. Far worse than a called strike 3 in my opinion.

Even more frustrating to see the bases loaded and nobody out and not capitialize in the 7th – coulda put the game away right there. Couldn’t get a hit with RISP to save their lives all day.

I’m not one of the geeks who goes nuts every time a sac bunt is called but I was this time, especially with Kozma in the on deck circle. Woulda rather seen a straight steal or hit and run though if a play was to be put on at all.

Bizzarro bringing Scrabble in at all, he’s been buried in the bullpen for a month – not sure why now was the time to roll him out in a big situation. Either leave Boggs in the game or bring in Rosenthal or Motte to blow the doors off.

The strike call was goofy indeed, at least 6 inches outside for sure.

Bottom line is the players failed to execute in big situations, it’s on them.

Davey said he doesn’t like to bunt (which comes as zero surprise), but Espinosa had struck out 3 times already. He thought that a faster runner than Morse would have scored on the bunt.

Davey also said he thought Matheney was going to leave Boggs in the game to pitch to Tracy.

Did anyone in the western hemisphere not know EXACTLY what sequence of events was going to unfold as soon as Matheny touched his left arm? Scrabble’s been so vulnerable (against lefties AND righties) the last two months that he’s been passed over for Sam Freeman in even remotely stressful situations, but suddenly he gets the call in the NLDS with the go-ahead run in scoring position? I like Mike Matheny, but that’s just awful managing.

And Craig and Yadi, much as I love them, should be saying a whole lot of Hail Marys for going up there hacking with the bases loaded in the 7th. Terrible.

So this is what it’s like to root for a team in the playoffs. I had forgotten; hadn’t rooted for a team in the playoffs since the 1992 Pirates. Nerve-wracking, in a good way. Can’t wait to experience it in person Wednesday.

Major props to Kurt Suzuki and Tyler Moore for the clutch hits, Ryan Mattheus for the clutch pitching.

Chad Tracy has had a very good year. I wouldn’t describe someone batting .269 off the bench as crappy.

Not sure what happened there. Did Morse miss the squeeze sign? But Morse is so slow, why would you call it. Personally, I think Espinosa was bunting for a hit. He does that quite a bit. After three K’s, not the worst decision. As you say, it worked out.

Frustrating to see the same bad managerial decisions year after year.

First, replacing a far superior reliever with a crappy reliever just because of R-L matchups….resulting in the Nationals bringing in a better hitter to face the crappy pitcher (who can’t get right handed hitters out)….you don’t bring in a lefty who can’t get out righties to face a crappy left handed pinch hitter who can easily be subbed out.

Second, a sacrifice bunt with none out in the 8th….giving away one of your 6 remaining outs.

Then having an ump take away an out by calling a strike on a pitch 6″ outside just adds insult to stupidity.
