They won 69 this year. If they get more games from Ellsbury and Ortiz it might make up for the loss of Gonzalez. I don’t see any reason to think they’ll win MORE than 69.

Sure they have the pieces in place, provided that Buchholtz and Lester just had off-years and permanently haven’t turned to crap, and that they can avoid another injury epidemic. They need a first-baseman–that’s easy; and a left-fielder. They need a #1,2 or 3 starter—presumably Dubront is a solid #4, and Lackey is #5 until he proves he’s better or worse. The bullpen should be solid, and if Bard gets it back, very solid. Presumably they will give Kalish right field, and if healthy, he’s up to it. The one big missing piece is a championship level shortstop. But the team has been without one since 2004, and has contended. Obviously there’s a lot of work to be done, but it’s far from grim.

The Red Sox are going to be pretty bad next year, regardless of what happens in the offseason. (There was reason to believe they’d be bad this year, too. They were a 3rd-place team that traded its shortstop and downgraded at closer. No reason to think they’d improve in the standings. None.)

I don’t want to see the team chase after free agents just yet. Play the kids, sign overpriced role players to 2-year contracts so that we’re not the AAA team we saw in September, and see if you’re ready to compete in 2014 or 2015. That’s what I’d like to see. And I’d like them to hire a no-name manager I’ve never heard of to guide the process.

No team lets the manager hire his own staff anymore. Teams are trying to build a cohesive approach from rookie ball through the majors and they want to ensure that EVERYONE is on board with the conceptual approaches they use….sure, the manager can make suggestions, but every guy is going to have to be approved by the GM in most cases.

I wonder if that $12 m offer to Bill Beane is still on the table…

1) They need a competent, experienced GM, to start. Spare no expense or gender. There are actually some female MLB executives who would be excellent candidates.

2) They need a competent, experienced Manager. Experienced = recent major league managing experience.

3) They need to let the manager hire his own staff. (i.e., let the current staff go – they’ll likely go to Cleveland anyhow)

4) Then they need to take a very hard look at their roster.

Farrell is NOT the answer because the issue is not simply the manager. And his managerial experience is not extensive anyhow. Some former managers not currently employed might be the way they proceed, at least for the near term, in order to calm the masses and bring some normalcy to the baseball organization, while perhaps developing a longer term prospect. Think Cox and Freddi Gonzalez, for instance.

Maybe someone (John Henry) needs to reevaluate Larry Lucchino’s position within that organization. Just my opinion.

Lucchino is just trying to get the “varsity” healthy in Boston so he can bring you competitive, entertaining baseball in 2013.

The only thing that interests him is the circus of Fenway, the show. He doesn’t give a shit about the team getting first place. He will be happy if they make it to the play-in game next season and lose because “well, hey…the Red Sox made it to the playoffs…”
