Oh look: Shane Victorino will be a TBS analyst for the LCS

Oct 8, 2012, 3:20 PM EDT

Shane Victorino

As a nation turns its TVs on to the playoffs next week, I can’t help but wonder if, like the fans of whoever signs Shane Victorino this offseason, they really wish he was Michael Bourn:

…for the next week, the fast-talking [Shane] Victorino will serve as a guest analyst for TBS’ coverage of baseball’s League Championship series. He starts Monday, in what for now is a three-day deal.

Victorino will be in the studio with commentators Dennis Eckersley and David Wells, and host Matt Winer. He’ll also join the group for the pregame broadcast.

Question: is Victorino contractually-obligated, like all other broadcasters, to note that he himself is from Hawaii?

I don’t get it – does Michael Bourn have broadcaster chops I’m not aware of?

I read a comparison between the free agent center fielders the other day and surprisingly Victorino’s numbers’s weren’t as far off from Bourn or Upton’s as you might think. Upton has the most power, of course, but Vic’s runs, stolen bases, on base %, ops aren’t so behind the others as you may think. This, during one of his worst years in the majors. Their contracts on the other hand are likely to be FAR different going forward.

He’ll just wear a lei during the broadcast.

I think if more people knew what a lei is they’d appreciate how brilliant this comment is.

there are people who don’t know what a lei is?

I was leid in Hawaii once when I was in the military. It cleared up after a visit to sick bay.

Glad this was such big news the HBT reported on it twice today.

course Shane could always sell his World Series ring to get his contract closer to Bourn’s…

drinking game — every time HBT writes a story about Shane Victorino as an analyst for TBS

Drinking game: every time someone mentions that Victorino is from his home state, whichever one that might be.

Jimmy Rollins is on MLB Tonight. I wonder if Ryan Howard is doing Baseball Tonight.

They’re trying to reign in a larger I-Talian audience.

“As a nation turns its TVs on to the playoffs next week”

A nation? More like a few TV markets, playoff baseball does not capture the imagination of this nation. It only does in the cities that still have teams playing. Waiting for the obligatory post from Craig about how baseball ratings really aren’t dwarfed by football due to his complex about baseball no longer being America’s favorite sport… And yes I’m trolling that should be quite obvious….
