Picture of the Day: Bryce Harper’s red contact lenses

Oct 10, 2012, 1:43 PM EDT

Bryce Harper is going without his usual ridiculous eye black for this afternoon’s game, but he is wearing red-tinted contact lenses that basically serve as sunglasses and our own Drew Silva snagged a screen shot:

That pic is bryce? He looks like a fart

  2. DelawarePhilliesFan - Oct 10, 2012 at 1:52 PM

And the best part is, he pulls it off without at all looking like Damien from “The Omen”

    • sabatimus - Oct 10, 2012 at 3:46 PM

His sanguis doesn’t look particularly minimus.

  3. kiwicricket - Oct 10, 2012 at 1:52 PM

So some dresses make you look fat, some glasses don’t fit your face…and red-tinted contact lenses make you look like some sort of marsupial?

  4. braddavery - Oct 10, 2012 at 1:57 PM

Why is his eye black “ridiculous”? Because he doesn’t wear it exactly like every other player does? Jesus. Since when is being your own person and doing things your own way “ridiculous”. I give the kid props for being an original and not some carbon copy print-out of “what an athlete is supposed to be”. I’m so sick of seeing people expect mundane from modern athletes.

I’m all for letting your freak flag fly, but you don’t think this looks a little bit ridiculous?

      http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/10/08/thats-some-clown-makeup-bro/

My guess is that because he has fair eyes, the eye black alone wasn’t cutting it for reducing glare. Lenses in the red-orange family are pretty effective for that purpose. I don’t think he’s making a statement other than “I have trouble seeing in the sun.”

Folks, just to recap here real quick: a man has taken a few minutes out of his busy day to log in to the comments section of a baseball blog to complain about another man calling yet another man’s eye black “ridiculous”. We all up to speed now? Super. Carry on.

      • braddavery - Oct 11, 2012 at 1:33 PM

Actually, I’m always logged in, so it’s as easy as typing and submitting. Took me about 6 seconds to write that and submit it. Aaron took the time to post it and I responded. In the comment section. Where comments are expected. Super. Carry on.

it is ridiculous because he is a baseball player and not a pro-wrestler.

    • echech88 - Oct 10, 2012 at 4:40 PM

It is ridiculous. He didn’t say it is disgraceful or an abomination.

He implied it is open to ridicule which is exactly what it is. Harper does it to stand out and get attention and channel the Ultimate Warrior. When people do things for attention, they do so knowing that it is ridiculous to the majority.

  5. sawxalicious - Oct 10, 2012 at 2:02 PM

    He looks “special”

    • dexterismyhero - Oct 10, 2012 at 2:12 PM

      His face is really…………….flat!

HBT must be working off implied oral consent.

  10. husky2score - Oct 10, 2012 at 2:34 PM

Pretty sure the camera effect gave him a red-eye.

Perhaps he should try intimidating the opposition with his bat for once.

  16. brewcrewfan54 - Oct 10, 2012 at 3:33 PM

The odds are good we’ll be seeing these in sporting good stores with a big picture of a smiling Bryce Harper hawking them very soon.

I remember a couple Twins trying them out a few years ago (Mauer was one). Apparently, it helps the seams of the ball stand out better to better determine the pitch type (among other things). Here’s a purveyor of various colored “sports” contact lenses:

*I have no affilitation or “skin” in the game, just a quick google search/result

tinted/colored lenses have been around for years… if they had any benefit, athletes would be using them by now (including those who don’t need vision correction).

The only benefit I’ve noticed is that I once saw a girl with bright, emerald-green eyes; after my heart skipped a beat I realized they had to be fake and lost interest.

Clown looking eye black > than those stupid “magnetic” bands.

  21. cpsmith23 - Oct 10, 2012 at 9:01 PM

Jokes aside, we all understand that what’s shown above is not an actual photo of Bryce Harper, right?

If it weren’t for the mole under his left eye, I wouldn’t think that the photo had any basis in reality. Obviously it’s been stretched or otherwise altered through an editing program like Photoshop or Phone Booth for Mac.

I mean, look at his left ear – that’s not Bryce Harper. You can’t tell me that this image was used without knowing what kind of comments it would receive. A simple Google image search should have stopped this stupid and reckless entry before it was posted.

    • Drew Silva - Oct 10, 2012 at 11:53 PM

I took a picture of my TV, man. That’s the only reason it looks kind of weird. Bad angle, sunlight, etc. But, uh, get your conspiracy on. If you want.

  22. Greg - Oct 14, 2012 at 1:24 PM

This is one classy “boy”! Check out how he responds after being stuck out by Jason Motte in the final game of the NLDS.
