Craig, there is a difference between “manufacturing a quote” and providing context for one coming from an anonymous person. I understand keeping the anonymity of the person being quoted but his article makes it sound like a player sought him out for the sole purpose of complaining about the shut down.

Glad the best response you could come up with is “you’re beyond help”. That was very insightful.

I still can’t, for the life of me, understand why they shut him down. As the season went on & they had a healthy lead in the NL East, they could’ve went to a 6-man rotation with Strasburg throwing bullpens in between to keep fresh. They could’ve also skipped him in the rotation a couple times down the stretch to limit his innings, while throwing simulated games on his turn to keep him fresh. Being that they shut him down completely, there’s no chance he comes back & that is a complete slap in the face to the other players on that team. There are players there who may not be on this team after this year & may never find themselves in the playoffs again. Had they thrown a 1-3 of Gonzalez, Stras, Zimmerman, they would CLEARLY be the favorites to come out of the NL. It’s such a damn shame that after decades of Expos/Nats futility that they pissed away their chances by being overly cautious with Strasburg. I’m a Mets fan, but I like the Nats; I travel down there to see a lot of games, including all the games v. The Mets. If the Mets weren’t going to be there, which was obvious from a week before the ASB, I was pulling for the Nats. One problem I can see coming out of this is that players may be less likely to go there via free agency when the team has shown the baseball world they will not go all-in to win.

I agree with Craig. This is not about Rosenthal. Sounds like one or more players making excuses for the team’s utter failure Sunday. That’s the disturbing thing.

Did the Cards make excuses for not having Adam Wainwright last year? Did America make excuses after the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Of course not. A few guys in the Nats’ clubhouse need to stop making excuses and play better.

No I wouldn’t question it because sounds reasonable. Rosenthal’s quote just sounds like manure-stirring to create controversy and readership while he hides behind anonymity. Having followed the Nationals since they’ve been here, including this year, I don’t believe that there are guys on this team who would say that at this time. Until Rosenthal provides names and the full conversation, I don’t believe him.

shawndc04, if an article by Ken Rosenthal featured an anonymous quote from a player saying “I think shutting Strasburg down was the right move”, would you be questioning whether the quote is real? I doubt it.

Lol…. Have you watched baseball recently? There’s this new experiment they are trying called a five man rotation which dictates that pitchers pitch on five days rest and sometimes six. Management is often tasked with the responsibility to protect the player from themselves. Statistically and factually speaking, for me, your argument is not valid.

Besides, it’s not that great of an argument. The bullpen allowed 8 runs in game 2. Strasburg did pitch well against the Cardinals a month ago, but who is to say he wouldn’t have allowed a run again and after being taken out for his high pitch count after 6 or 7 innings that the bullpen wouldn’t have allowed runs either? No one… Not to mention why you’re still worrying about game 2 at all knowing you have to win 2 of 3 at home.

Division Series TIED 1-1 and even one player complaining that Strasburg isn’t available to pitch is most definitely news – not to mention, it’s not a good sign of the clubhouse psyche.

Not only that, but it’s sort of a backhanded slap at Zimmerman.

Tip: when someone uses an anonymous quote without providing any context at all it lacks some credibility. My “likes” and “dislikes” had nothing to do with my post.

Who is to say that quote didn’t come from Jordan Zimmermann with the context of “If Strasburg had pitched instead of my horrible game, we would be up 2-0.” Nobody knows who said it and how it was said outside of the player and Rosenthal. It could have been a completely tongue and cheek statement or it could have been doom and gloom but Rosenthal did nothing to put it into perspective and simply rehashed the same things he said a month ago.

As a constant reader here I do appreciate you actually responding to comments. It gives this site a much more personal feel.

did you start watching baseball yesterday pichers have been known to pitch back to back 9/10 inning outings on 3 days rest if you pitch your a pitcher and if your a pitcher you take the ball every 4th day and do the absolute best for your team your argument (for me ) doesn’t hold water throwing a measley 100 pitches does more harm than to go out there and throw 150 piches every 4 days. If you require T.J. SURGERY OR ANY OTHER,.it’s about not being properly conditioned. and by the way the decision should come down to the player not the G.M., unless the G.M. doesn’t think he’s good enough.
