Comments on: Giants reinstate Melky Cabrera, but still won’t use him in postseason

If Melky is TRULY repentant & can convince the club (top to bottom) that he regrets his actions & will abide by a much higher moral standard, then the Giants are truly primed for another exciting season in 2013. In the meantime, he deserves to be excluded from this yr’s championship quest.

Let him earn his ring next year – the Old Fashioned way!

On another issue: Sure seems like Posey can’t stomach Lincecum and openly dissed him on the field after the Game 5 win. Posey seems the epitomy of a guy w/ real character and may have issues with the fact that TL is a whole lot looser…. For the sake of the team, I’d like to see that get resolved.

I wish Josh well, but I think he’s gonna be more trouble than he’s worth. I think the Giants would be better off spending that money to lockup some of their current crop of young players (Belt, Crawford, Sandoval).

If owners are to be believed, Larry Behr also points out that a player fresh off a 50 game suspension is going to need to get some games under his belt before he is game-ready It’s got to be chemistry that is kerping him off the roster though as a rusty Cabrera can’t be worse than Nady.

Where is there room for Josh Hamilton if the Giants have Melky, Pagan, Pence set in stone? Don’t forget, Gary Brown will be given every opportunity to make this team in 2013.

Actually there is: 1. Mota says he tested positive because he took a swig of his daughter’s cough syrup when he had bronchitis. Which sounds sketchy, I grant you, but by all accounts both MLB and the Giants believe it to be true. 2. Cabrera burned a lot of bridges when he walked out of the clubhouse without talking to his teammates the day he was suspended. That kind of behavior is pretty much the antithesis of the team-first, “play for the guy next to you” philosophy that carried the Giants to their big comeback in the NLDS. Team chemistry is at an all time high on the Giants right now, and they are wise not to mess with it..

Stop with the Mota argument. Just stop. The two are completely different situations and cannot be compared. Mota claimed he drank children’s cough syrup. The MLB stated that they believed him, and beat reporters at the time were saying that he was dealing with a flu. He had to be suspended because of policy, but the guy wasn’t roiding. Even then, he still apologized for messing up and took full blame for not being more careful with what he was putting in his body.

Melky is an entirely different story. He took a PED to cheat, and then tried to cover it up by working with his agent to create a fake website. One made an honest mistake, and the other cheated and then lied about it. So obviously management is going to treat them differently. It’s a fair argument that he should be on the roster because of his skill at the plate in comparison to Blanco/Nady, but stop with the damn Mota nonsense.

True, there is no sane baseball reason to keep Melky off the field. Steroids or not, 50 game layoff or not, he’s still better than Blanco/Nady.

However, there is clubhouse chemistry to consider. By all accounts, the Giants players turned against Melky when he was suspended. They’ve apparently bonded together post-suspension. If reinstating him would rock the boat, and piss people off to the point of impacting everyone else’s performance, it might make sense to leave him off the active roster. Sabean’s gotta weigh improved LF production vs potentially decreasing production elsewhere on the field.

Given their treatment of repeat offender Mota and the industry standard practices, this is an inexplicable absurdity that isn’t getting nearly enough attention.

The Giants fans should be livid. Their front office lampooned. Beyond simply throwing away baseball advantages, there is no reasonable moral construct which absolves Mota and condemns Cabrera even after his penance has been paid.
