I remembered watching this game and thinking it was the worst strike zone I had ever seen. I didn’t realize it was a day that had it’s own official anniversary though.

Worth pointing out: Eric Gregg was a wonderful human being. Did he have crappy games? Absolutely, but the guy was no Bob Davidson or Joe West. The world would be a better place if more people had that guys heart – and that is a fact.

Fifteen years. Hard to believe. I remember that game about as fondly as the Battle of Port Arthur. This was, of course, four years after the Indians screwed over the City of Homestead after letting them rebuild the hurricane-damaged stadium that was supposed to have been their spring training complex and bolted for central Florida. I savored every moment of watching them get screwed over, even as much as I appreciated the absurdity of Gregg’s umpiring bagatelle.

The cold does funny things to your head.

Umps still think the people are there to see them (I can’t believe their union hasn’t yet demanded golden statues be erected in their likeness outside the stadiums…)

Worse yet, they have no accountability – hence no motive for striving towards job excellence.

Well, based on the pitches in the video, his strike zone was consistent. It was just off about a foot to a foot and a half. That was pretty horrible, though.

Yes it was an awful strike zone. But I always wonder how did Greg Maddux (whose control was so good he coulf probably kill a gnat on a wall with a baseball) not adjust and get outdueled by Livan? Memorable game..

As a young Marlins fan at the time, I’ll never forget the excitement of that game. One of my greatest Fish memories.

Worth pointing out: Eric Gregg was completely consistent in his strike zone that day. Maddux got all the same calls. People like to forget that.

Based on how far outside Gregg was calling strikes Hernandez could have thrown a ball behind the batters knees and gotten the strike calls on the inside too.

I remember that and it was unbelievable. All those umpires back then – Gregg, McSherry (both dead) and that dope Joe West (is still around) all thought the people were there to see them and didn’t give a sh!t if they got the call right or not. They were such unprofessional slobs and then those friggin idiots had the temerity to believe their ‘mass resignation’ would bring MLB to a grinding halt. Then when Selig happily accepted all the resignations some of them, like West, begged and groveled and got their job back others like Gregg and some of the other slobs never worked again and would show up on some pathetic piece of how they got screwed. Joyce was not quite there last nigh but was a reasonable facsimile

Wow, Livo looks so young… Yeah, that strike zone yesterday was strange, and got stranger as the game went on. Didn’t really favor either team. Holliday was laughing after his K (what else could he do?) but in the 9th Storen got jobbed on a clear strike that was called a ball.

That was the first season I started to watch baseball. I remember that game clearly, wondering if that was normal.

On another note….
Does anyone else get the 600lb Sumo Vs the 170lb MMA fighter in the bottom corner after the original clip? I just about died laughing at some of the commentary in that.
