Well, did either side actually make an overture to the other side? Or was it merely a case where there was mutual disinterest so neither side really pursued it?

How can you say Beltran was a bust in SF? His OPS for SF was .920! Hell, I hope the Mets obtain a few busted players next year, lol.

It was his free-agent year, and he refused to re-sign with the Royals because they wouldn’t give him the money he wanted. So got traded and played out the season in Houston before he signed a huge contract with the Mets.

Do you actually know anything about the game, or just make randome comments that have nothing to do with reality?

Beltran’s camp (includes, of course, the agent) claims the Giants never made any attempt whatsoever. Giants claim they did, but Beltran made it clear he didn’t like playing in SF. Certainly, his play there showed it. And it wouldn’t be the first time someone didn’t want to be cold and have their offensive numbers stymied. He was pretty much a bust in the couple of months he was there – injured, and then on track too late to matter. It also seemed that he’d want more to play in SF than he ended up signing for in St. Louis. Even with that, the number would’ve been workable, and the Giants seem to have their organization act together these days. Beltran’s story may be the truth, but I’m more inclined to believe it was straight out of the CYA school of PR.

Just curious. What were the reported reasons, from both sides, for Beltran not resigning with the Giants? I really didn’t follow that last winter, but I was under the impression that the Giants had simply made a decision not to pursue Beltran as they thought he would cost too much money and they thought they could fill their needs with other options.

That is a very ill-informed fallacy that sadly often gets repeated.

Beltran in fact had a stellar 2006 postseason, with 3 HRs, 5 RBIs, 9 walks, and a combined .978 OPS in 10 games. He is one of the greatest postseason performers ever, and 2006 was no exception, only adding to his record. It’s too bad some let one at bat color their whole perception of reality.

Beltran is a no doubt HoF CF. Since 1980 the only CF better than him is Ken Griffey Jr. Maybe you can make an argument for Jim Edmonds, but that’s it.

It would be a crime not to have him in. And I can’t wait to see him mash in the NLCS.

Now it really gets interesting, as CB is going to play against the team he claims didn’t want him last winter. I find his story hard to believe, and as much as Brian Sabean rubs many the wrong way, I’m still inclined to believe the Giants’ side of the story. That said, CB is a great player, and he’ll no doubt inflict even more pain on the Giants. I just hope it’s not enough to have the Cardinals win the NLCS.

Maybe the reason the Royals didn’t make the playoffs is becaue Beltran ran away for the money? Keep him in the line-up and lots of things change.

Like the guys who replaced him don’t play and suck

Maybe other free agents actually want to come to KC and play, making them better

Maybe the draft is different

The Royals probably wouldn’t have made a lot of playoffs with Beltran, but you don’t know that. Beltran could have changed the future of the Royals, but chose the money instead.

Beltran is a legit 5 tool player and has the skills that many in the HOF never did. His numbers will continue to increase and he should get to cooperstown.

Getting him out when it mattered seemed impossible. Scary good postseason for him. He saw the ball well in shadows, in the day, at night. I knew when he led off the 9th hed get on, i was just hoping it wouldn’t kill us…
