Umpire conferences already slow games down and always have. A few moments to ensure a key play is called correctly via replay would not slow down a game any more than an umpire conference does.

It’s the same “official” technology that requires 2 minutes to trace down a phone number on a TV show whereas Caller ID shows it instantly.

“Radio”? Watch the “outfield board”? Have I traveled back in time again? Why if only wire less, small, high quality, telephones with hi-def screens existed. If only they had tiny earpieces that had some sort of close proximity to the phone functionality so they wouldn’t need wires. And if all of this was seamless technology that had been around for a decade, simple to use, and would allow the fans to see the same angles the umps were watching…I know. I know. I must think this is 3012 or something. What’s next? Flying cars?

WTF are you talking about? I’ve watched hundreds of hours of cricket (I don’t sleep well). By far most of the calls get made at the moment, no replay because ITS OBVIOUS what the call was. When its close or disputed THEN they go to replay. Pretty much like in tennis, really. Works rather well and keeps the fan/player bitching to a minimum. Kiwi’s point is rather well made here. Have some vegemite, kiwi.

Watch tonights game and notice how the analysts and commentators feel the need to offer omments on every damn pitch and ump decision. Replay is just the the begining of their opinions becoming fact. Dont want em. We have gotten this far without em. Dont trust them.

You lost me on the instant replay argument, though. That’s not the media, that’s the league. And what do you mean “it ain’t broke”? Isn’t that the point? Of course it was broke out there in the eighth inning. You want to control the course of the game? Have an umpire “accidentally” making his own calls on people he doesn’t like.

Homerism? Craig is not from New York and is not a Yankee fan. If you really read this site much, you’d know he grew up a Tigers fan (although his primary rooting interest is now the Braves) and his girlfriend is a Tigers fan. If he has a bias in this series, it virtually guaranteed to be pro-Tigers. Stop with the delusions of persecution.

The beauty of being a fan of professional baseball is our ability to compare and contrast players and teams. Didnt like the idea of Playoffs, but accepted it as necessary due to the overexpansion of teams. Still dont like the DH. Too much strategy lost trying to improve offense. What is wrong with a well played, 3-2 game? Interleague play? Another shamless money-grab. Watching Sandy Koufax pitch to Mickey Mantle was meant to be historic!

So now you want to let the Media help decide games? Right, like they will never have a vested interest in the outcome? Plueeezzzzee!

Whats next? How about letting the networks set up an infared cage around home plate? The length and bottom of the cage can be preprogrammed for each batter. They’re almost there already, with the announcers challenging the call of damn near every pitch.

Its a slippery slope. Leave the game alone. There have always been bad calls in baseball. If it aint broke, dont fix it. Dont begin the process of turning over our game to ‘the guys in the truck’. We know that they work for people who are looking for profit, not truth.

Girardi’s comments show why Instant Replay is needed – teams that score zero runs won’t have a scapegoat.

Infante was out by a mile (stating teh obvious), and yes, plays like that should be reviewed. No question about it. But hey, Giaradi, get your head out of your ass. 21 innings played in the ALCS, your team has thrown up a donut in 20 of them. And you weren’t setting world on fire against the O’s. State the case on why we need Instant Replay, then save the passion for your teams pathetic hitting.

Joe addressed the lack of hitting in the post game interview. He knows there is a problem (or nine of them, depending on how one looks at it). Unfortunately he can’t just press a button and fix it. His comments on replay were pretty well reasoned.

While no one is happy about the call no one is saying it was the difference, especially given NY’s complete inability to score any runs off anyone not named Valverde. The call did change the game situation, but seriously the way they are going one run may as well have been ten. Last night’s game isn’t the only reason for replay. Remember Don Denkinger & the Cards, or the nearly perfect game.

If NY loses this series the narrative will focus on offensive ineptitude, not a blown call at second.

When the instant replay doesn’t see it, you get no reversal of the call. It’s just like football. You should have fewer cases, because you are not supposed to have scrums in baseball. But it doesn’t take more than a few corrections of egregious calls to really improve fans’ faith in the umpiring. The one at second was easy.

Now tell the rest of the story about the replays in cricket. The chickenshit umpires are afraid to make a single call. Anytime anything is close, they automatically go to the replay. For everything.

It’s not make a call, and then go to replay. Its ‘not make a call, call time, and then go to replay’.

They might as well take the umpires off the field and just let the cameras call everything. Considering it takes no less than 5 minutes for every call to be made by the umpire in the booth, you are adding way too much time to the game.

This is all happening without the teams asking for their challenges.

So what you are advocating is everytime there is a close play there is an automatic reveiw, taking a lot of time, and still giving teams challenges in case they don’t like a call that isn’t even close.

Its a game. Not an assembly line. Take your automation back to the cricket pitch and leave it off the baseball field.

If the botched call at second base is going to be the headline from the Yankees perspective then it’s safe to say they’re grasping at straws now for a rallying cry. I sincerely doubt had that call been made correctly that the outcome of the game would have been any different. Girardi has every right to be mad about the call but I believe he should spend a little of that energy towards his own team & their inability to hit the baseball (unless Jose Valverde is in the game, and that guy can go straight to hell as far as I’m concerned). I do give credit to the Tigers pitching staff though, again omit that worthless clown Valverde, for going into Yankee Stadium and keeping their bats quiet for two games. Looking forward to a Verlander start at home tomorrow night, going to make for some good TV I hope.

It’s not like if they actually would overturn a call after Nate McLouth’s pitch down the right field line on replay bounced off the foul pole they still wouldn’t change the call. They weren’t even down the tunnel long enough to take a look at it.

Exactly!! One guy only has to have a little radio in which someone(a guy watching a television) indicates, fair/foul,safe,out etc. It literally takes a minute.

Your way would probably take a little longer than 30 seconds. With the shape half the umpires are in, it would take them a couple of minutes to all get to second base to review the play. Make it even simpler. Just have a 5th umpire somewhere in the stadium continuously reviewing calls so any controversial call can be instantly called correctly. Daid 5th umpire can radio down the correct call to an umpire wired to receive the call.

It’s true that you need a little more offense to win, but the Yankees got hosed on that call. If Joe Girardi runs on the instant replay platform, he will be my write in candidate for President.

It is as simple as the umps standing in their little group at 2nd base watching the video board in the outfield of the television’s replay. They watch all the angles that the booth shows and should take them no more than 30 seconds to issue a ruling. No need to go to thru the dugout to whereever the video is at and to get a snack and take a leak while down there.

It is not that hard.
