What A Rod did was cheat. Tell me what has he done since the steroid era? Ozzie was a more exciting player to watch. Ran the bases like a horse, he was a great ss and an entertaining player. A rod is a cocky guy woth no personality. He is getti g betched these days.

If you can read, he didn’t throw it away, he did the best he could to invest and got his ass handed to him, he and several million other Americans in the last 20 years. He didn’t spend it on bling and hookers and Cristal and a massive entourage; he tried to invest and lost his ass. Might wind up just as broke, and no doubt didn’t have nearly as much fun, but still it’s a whole different deal in my opinion.

I think it gets realy hard for athletes to live a “regular” life when they are at the top of their game, and surrounded by excess. They came from a regular life (if not abject poverty), struggled in the minors earning enough money to share an apartment with 3 other players and eat ramen noodles each night, and then POOF! they’re major leaguers. The money is nice, but along with it comes the intense pressure to “live the lifestyle”. Have you ever seen the kinds of houses these guys buy or build? They’re ridiculous, and most of the time they are so highly personalized that they get crushed when trying to sell. Not to mention family, “friends” and the entourage who all have ideas for how to spend the athletes money.

Then the career is over, the money is NOT flowing in any longer, but the lifestyle is still costing you….

I think the NFL has program that teaches the young players how to handle their money, and how to save for the inevitable retirement. If these guys could learn to live on HALF of what they make, then they are in a great position to not work again when they retire well before reaching 40. Heck, ask Bobby Bonilla how he likes his yearly checks…….

I’m not a Yankees fan. And nowhere did I say Ozzie wasn’t a great SS (though he is fantastically overrated). You seem to be the one with the reading comprehension problem.

And no, calling Ozzie’s best season comparable to ARod’s ninth best is not disingenuous. I’m not just pulling this out of thin air.

If this is really for estate and family planning purposes then its most likely it is to use the proceeds to setup trust funds for his kids and/or grandchildren. Let’s face it, when they inherit this stuff they were just going to auction it off anyway. It doesn’t seem unreasonable or unusual to me.

Okay, i understand reading comprehension is not a strong point of many Yankee fans so let me help some of you along. Characterizing Ozzie’s best season with ARods 9th best season is just slightly disingenuous.

That and oh yes, there actually are SS’s, other than Yankee SS’s, who play or have played the game that are/were pretty good. Expand your horizons yankee fans, check it out, you might see something you like.

I guess i better stop smoking crack thinking 13 Gold Gloves vs 2 makes Ozzie slightly better than a-rods “9th” best season. Maybe he was almost as good as his 10th or 11th best season eh?

Ozzie is considered one of the greastest SS’s of all time. At least the HOF thought so voting him in on his first year of eligibility so move along misguided spanky fan.

Ozzie can generate over $50k a year in appearences and his baseball pension probably pays somewhere over $50k.
Those figures are conservative. Could be more $ than that.
It is hard for an average Joe like me to see how someone is broke on $100k a year unless their debts are enormous.

More times than not it’s simple
They lived the dream, they don’t always value the awards and trinkets as much as the open market and decide to cash in. Some people are not sentimental and like money more than a statuette.

Knight said he was selling his to pay for his grandchildren’s college education. Maybe he’s doing the same thing or putting it in a trust fund for his kids/grandkids? His financial adviser may simply be telling him to convert his assets to cash and invest it? Could be too early for the “he pissed away $30 million” kneejerks right now.

I heard Bobby Knight was doing something similar. Just because they are selling the stuff they earned doesn’t automatically mean they are in a dire financial situation.

Just because to some of you, these things are invaluable, doesn’t they are invaluable to them. Could be he has to sell but so what. It’s their stuff to sell.
