Blue Jays claim Cory Wade off waivers from Yankees

Oct 17, 2012, 3:40 PM EDT

New York Yankees Joe Girardi removes Cory Wade in MLB game with Chicago White Sox in New York Reuters

When the Yankees designated reliever Cory Wade for assignment last week I wrote that he could help quite a few teams as a bullpen option for 2013 and it turns out one of the other AL East teams agreed.

Toronto claimed Wade off waivers, presumably to give the 31-year-old right-hander a shot at winning a middle relief gig during spring training.

Wade had an ugly 6.46 ERA in 39 appearances for the Yankees this season, but posted a strong 38/8 K/BB ratio in 39 innings and was very good last year with a 2.04 ERA and 30/8 K/BB ratio in 40 frames.

I can’t understand what the hell happened to this guy, last year he was lights out. For the Yankees to quit on him, it must be more than mechanics, something else is his problem.

Maybe there was something wrong with Wade, but 39 IP is a pretty small sample to judge him on when there wasn’t a problem evident in the K/BB ratio.

For example, the first 39 innings of Max Scherzer’s 2012 season was pretty ugly if I recall, but as long as his K/BB ratio remained solid, most folks expected his results would improve and they did.

Isn’t Tampa behind the Blue Jays in the waiver claim ladder?

        Yep, Tampa is behind Toronto.

More to the point is why didn’t the Red Sox claim him? I assume that their managerial search is impacting their player personnel decision making.

proudly… maybe after the Aceves debacle they had enough of Yankee castoffs.
