Deploying ‘Mr. November’ is Yankees diplomacy. They wouldn’t want to get Reggie all ornery and have him spouting off nonsense about being disrespected and such. So, the Yankees simply took advantage of MLB having had lost their minds in scheduling World Series games into November.

The thing is, we need only take one game out of the ’77 World Series and Reggie ain’t ‘Mr. October’. It’s not like he was ever a consistent producer in the playoffs for the Yankees.

The thing is everyone conveniently forgets that Reggie .125 in the ’77 ALCS. and was benched once and pinch hit for once in that series. He was pinch hit for two more times in the first 3 games of the ’77 WS.

In fact, ARod (2012) and Reggie (1977) both sported a .125 AVG and an OPS around .346 through their first 16 playoff AB’s of those respective years.

And Reggie continued to suck through the first two games of the World series. He was 1-2 in Game 1 before Martin pinch hit Paul Blair for him and 0-4 with 2K’s in Game 2.

In fact, in Game 3 he went 1-3 w/ 2 Runs, an RBI and 2 K’s and was pinch hit for AGAIN.

So, through the first 8 Games of the 77 Playoffs, Jackson was 4-25 (.160) w/ ZERO HR’s. And then he got hot for THREE games and he was anointed “Mr. October” via a backhanded compliment by Thurman Munson.

Bottom line, anyone can get hot at any time and in a short series if you get hot enough and make a big enough impact on a series no one remembers you started out .130 (3-23) through your first 23 AB’s.

Then again Jackson was 6 years younger in 1977 than A-Rod is in 2012, and had a much bigger chip on his shoulder than A-Rod has ever had.

Reggie played great pissed off, Rodriguez, on the other hand, crawls into a shell.

Unless A-Rod somehow ignites a miracle turnaround, he needs to leave this town. It’s bad for him and for the team for him to be a sideshow attraction. It’s a crying shame that so many players are driven out of NYC for every reason imaginable.

If only we could keep the players and trade the reporters.

I usually support most baseball writers for various reasons but not so with Lupica. He has devolved into an annoying antagonist who rarely brings much to the table news or opinion wise. I doubt he even spends much time in the clubhouse anymore. Ignore him but Unforttunatly he won’t go away.
